Hi, I am relatively new to mumsnet and my children are 18mo and 11wk and, as far as I know, not SN. However, I used to be the senior clinician at a charity called BIRD which has a unique treatment programme for children an adults with SN. It truly is amazing- I have seen some fantastic results. Just thought I would post this in case anyone was interested. Any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

no it doesn't involve birds it stands for Brain injury rehabilitation and development but that can be a bit off putting and a bit of a mouthful. The website is www.b-i-r-d.org.uk

it works on the basis that many people with SN have neurodevelopmental difficulties such as retained primitive reflexes (an innate neurological reflex which all babies have but should change as the person develops). The BIRD treatment assesses these neurodevelopmental issues and then teaches you a programme to do at home which will help to correct them- promoting improved functioning in areas of everyday life. Obviously needs a lot more explanation than that but that's it in a nutshell! It can help people of all ages (youngest is usually about 2 years old) with anything from Dyspraxia to Autism to CP to Developmental Delay etc.

thanks for that. I had a butchers and called up. Pretty interesting. I'm all for trying out anything that may help. Only prob is that more hours need to be put in the day to cope with all the groups / therapies/ activities!

Honestly had never heard of it - came over all tippi hedren at the name

Correct them?

a programme that can correct Autism, Dyspraxia and CP

thats either ambiguously worded, or another scheme offering false hope to parents who cling to the notion of a cure.

I'll hope for the former instance... and keep my really cynical thoughts to myself.

im always a little cynical about these things anyway but if it helps it has to be a good thing.
