After 5 years we finally have a diagnosis. Doctor has given DD1 a low dose of Methylphenidate to see how it goes. Hopefully we will find it easier now to get her the help and support she needs.

SparklyGothKat, this is slightly hijacking, but can you tell me is there anything any of your friends could have said to you that would be really supportive? I have a friend in a similar position to you and don't want to put my foot in my mouth or upset her, but I do want to convey support.

By the way, I really hope your dd and you get all the support you need.

SparklyGothKat · 02/10/2006 14:23

For years they have put her behaviour down to her Cerebral palsy but I knew it wasn't.

Oh hon', glad you got the dx, that's great and as you say, hopefully you can start getting some proper support now and her needs can be met etc.

I have no idea Annie, all my friends and family have known for years that she has behaviour problems so its not a shock to anyone

Oh, different situation then. I'm glad you have family around you that are cool with the whole thing.

Glad youve got the diagnosis for your daughter sparklygothcat. My eldest son has adhd and he was diagnosed at the age of 4.

misdee · 02/10/2006 16:58

yeah we've known sparklys dd1 had behaviour problems from a very young age. so it isnt a shock to us at all. she does make me laugh 'bye fat man' pmsl!!

MrsApronstrings · 02/10/2006 17:05

Well done on getting your dx. my dd got hers at about 8 - I had known there was something going on for a good 4 years. We also have a statement (although i know other adhd children who do not) We also take medication - and it helps somewhat but for us was basically fairly disappopinting my dd's adhd is described as 'partially' managed. Glad you posted sparklyGothKat - I often think there don't seem to be many of us on mn.
How old is dd?

SparklyGothKat · 02/10/2006 17:54

She is 6, we are going through the statementing process atm, she has CP, ADHD, visual persecption (sp?) difficulties, learning problems and has a few problems with her eyes, so she really needs it...

Hi Sparkly

I have changed my msn address as my pc packed up.

As you know dd also has Adhd and would be good to talk.

Things are so much better now since the medication. I can't even bare to think of just how bad things were before. Honestly things will be much better for the whole family.

Did they rule out AS as I know that was a concern as well?

Hope to hear from you soon xxx

SparklyGothKat · 02/10/2006 19:52

BH, AS was ruled out last year. Yes it would be good to chat to you about it. My email is mieow79 (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Sparkly im glad you have a dx IYKWIM.
DD has CP and we think she is definately on the spectrum in fact the Paed suggested it the other week.

As a mother you just "know" dont you

SparklyGothKat · 04/10/2006 00:05

well first day of the meds, and she has only just gone to sleep. She is a bit tearful today, is that normal??

OP posts:
MrsApronstrings · 04/10/2006 00:37

we have tried various meds. ritalin, adderall, strattera - not sure what methylphenidate is. Our dd has always seemed to need really little sleep - and ritalin and adderall amde this worse (it was one o fthe reasons for switching).
I would also suggest you watch dd's temper - because our dd would get into quite and agressive rage - which was uncharacterisrtic.

SparklyGothKat · 04/10/2006 00:50

I think its a form of ritlin (from what I have read on the net) She has a terrible temper anyway, she lashes out for no reason, so to get through today with no fights was a miracle.

today was a huge change in her behaviour. She didn't screech once and actually talked normally at a normal noise level. She went to sleep at 9pm, which is better than yesterday's 11pm. She seems so daydreamy sometimes, but I suppose its because I am used to a whirlwind for a daughter....
