DD IS ENTITLED TO DLA!!!! THANKYOU MUMSNET!!!

I've just received my letter this morning saying dd aged 11 is entitled to DLA - she gets middle rate for help with personal care and lower rate for help with getting around. I made the claim in May after reading on mumsnet that you can claim DLA without dc having a formal diagnosis.
Every professional and school staff tell me dd is 'fine' ... I just can't believe I've got some recognition that actually dd is not fine!
Dd has just started secondary school and is getting huge help from SENCO there so I feel our world is looking up!

Thank you to all on mumsnet who've helped and advised me previously and who continue to do so ...

Thanks Thanks

fab news - I have just applied for my 11 year old daughter - she does have a dx but im not sure if she will get it or not - applied in September so I have a long wait ahead of me I think

frazzledbutcalm · 23/10/2014 14:18

I think mine took so long as I didn't provide any supporting evidence/letters etc, so I guess government must have been ringing/writing to doctors etc to find evidence of entitlement. Good luck with your claim!

Really polter?? .... so I'll ring up about carers allowance and tax credits. What's the short breaks service? .. and guess I'll have to read up on the Equality Act ... never heard of it Blush

Is there anything else I should know/be doing?

Have you changed your name .. are you poltergoose usually?

you can also apply for a CEA card which is a cinema card so means a carer goes free with her.

Ineedmorepatience · 23/10/2014 19:48

YAY!! Well done frazzled Grin

Photocopy your award letter and take the copy everywhere with you, you will be surprised how many places will give you carer goes free admission.

frazzledbutcalm · 23/10/2014 21:44

Ha Ha I saw through your disguise polter Wink
Thanks bjk .. that's a good bonus!
Ineed .. I can't believe it's come through! Thanks for the tip! Do places advertise free admission for carer or do I have to ask?

OP posts:
bjkmummy · 23/10/2014 21:55

often you have to ask but loads of places do discounts so deffo worth asking

youarewinning · 24/10/2014 20:16

Fab news.

It does open so many doors. You need to tell any income related place you get DLA now. (Tax credits, council if you get housing benefit etc and I'm not sure who about carers!)

My local short breaks will provide someone to accompany DS to clubs etc and I just pay normal club fees to club iyswim?

frazzledbutcalm · 24/10/2014 22:29

Hi you .. Dd won't go with anyone .. but it's good to know help is there.
I'm preparing to tell tax credits, council tax, and also to try and claim carers. Is there anyone else I should notify?

I'm confused as to how the decision was made. My letter says DWP obtained medical records .. yet all medical professions tell me dd is fine Confused

youarewinning · 24/10/2014 22:33

If you've sought medical help it will be on record. Therefore they have record of your concerns. Whether they actin them or not you can't deny they are true!

DS doesn't do clubs either - except swimming which he manages without support. I have said he can have help but he just don't do clubs!

frazzledbutcalm · 24/10/2014 22:42

Oh I've never thought of it like that ...

Dd is still undergoing assessment for ASD but we keep getting told at every corner that she's fine. I honestly didn't expect this award. I'm thrilled at the recognition of our struggles!

youarewinning · 25/10/2014 10:46

My DS is also un diagnosed ATM. He is also waiting assessment for ASD.

frazzledbutcalm · 25/10/2014 19:14

Am I supposed to let the assessment team know? Will it help? If they still say she's fine Hmm , can they over-rule the DLA decision?

The award will help pay for the extra diesel in getting her to school as she won't go with anyone else, I have to take her to the gate and pick her up from the gate. It's a good 20 minute walk from our house and she can't walk that far due to hypermobility and femoral neck anti version so we have to go in the car.

It will help with the postage I have to pay for clothes to be delivered as she doesn't like going outside, let alone shopping!

Her orthotic insoles that cost a fortune, but are way better than NHS ones.

And just so much more!!!

Ok ... I've phoned tax credits, applied online for carers and have my council tax form here in front of me. Have looked at CEA, will get one. Is there anything else I can do?

I know some of your dc go to school in a taxi .. how does that work? Is that part of the help, or do you pay for it out of DLA?

TIA

I got told by secondary I've applied for DS to go to that if they have an EHCP pupils are entitled to transport but that parents may be asked to contribute.

frazzledbutcalm · 28/10/2014 22:12

thanks you .. I'll check it out.
