14 year old boy won't engage with world

I am a widowed parent of a 14 year old boy: his mother died 2 years ago. He is of very average educational ability. The problems I'm facing are that he won't engage at all with school, he sees no value in it and he does as little work as possible. He says he's interested in nothing the school provides either through the curriculum or its other activities. He refuses point blank to read anything and he takes no interest at all in what is going on in the world. His only interests are the x-box and his friends, who are all similar to him. He is falling behind in school and this pattern looks set to continue. He also refuses to think about his prospects/choices for when he leaves school.

I have hired tutors in English and Maths which has helped and I hate to think where I'd be without them. He has a touch of ADHD, possibly a touch of Aspergers but there are no obvious major developmental issues. GPs and paediatricians have been no help at all.

Does anyone know what I can do to encourage him to engage? Does anyone know who I could take him to see to try to get him to engage with the world and think about his future
