Weighted blanket - are we too late?

My DD is a terrible sleeper and I don't feel we are making much progress with it (currently getting up 20 times a night). Someone mentioned on here about a weighted blanket, my DD is 4, almost 5, are we too late to introduce this?
They are so expensive I don't want to get one and find out we can't use it with her!

Not too late at 5. Can introduce at any age. Can you borrow one from your OT . (they will give you correct weight for her weight and advise re using overnight.) I'd try before you buy as some kids love them, so kids can't bear them. Sometimes local disability groups have them to loan. I think some of the company's you but them from even do this now (at a cost)

Much much cheaper to make them than buy them. Really easy to do - just need a sewing machine, either old duvet cover / sheet / fabric and poly beads. Was a while ago now, but I think with all materials (used new fleece fabric) I did it for about £40 rather than the £150 most company's wanted.

Google making weighted blankets and you'll see how simple it is to do.

Many methods available online...

I think this making channels, filling and sewing across method is the simplest :

What is she like if you tuck a blanket in over her moo?

Does she like tight hugs?

Dd3 wants me to hug her and even lie on her all the time. She loves to be squashed.

She was 11 when we bought her weighted blanket, so you are definitely not too late.

Thanks everyone. Hiring one sounds like a good idea to start with. And in the meantime I'll try tucking her in very very tightly and see if that helps!

If you turn a blanket round so it is long ways across the bed, you have more to tuck in. If she finds it to hot either reduce her duvet to a summer one or use an empty duvet cover instead of a blanket to tuck in.

Dd3 is always freezing at night for some unknown reason so she loves extra blankets but some children hate it.

Good luck Smile

I think I need to brush up on my sewing skills!

When you use a weighted blanket is that instead of a duvet or in addition to it? (Sorry if stupid question!)

Thats a great idea polter Grin

moo Dd3 has both duvet and weighted blanket but as I said early, she loses her body heat very quickly in the night and is always cold!

I would be careful initially not to let your Dd over heat.

Also OT's will tell you that the protocol states that you shouldnt sleep all night under a weighted blanket..... I am not going to comment on that Wink Shock

Good luck Op
We nearly got one but while I was deciding which one to get the tucking in with sideways duvet really tight did the trick.
Also blackout blinds really really helped (easyblinds)
