how to start the ball rolling

DH has AS. I've always thought DS1 has AS too. When he was 3 I asked the HV for a referral to a community paed. She saw him every few months for about a year, assessed him at school etc. At first she said she thought ASD, then she changed her mind. Starting school really helped him, I think it was the routine although the teacher in reception said he was unsettled on days like school trips or "science week" hen they did different things. DS2 has SN and when DS1 was 3 we had lots of people coming round like physios, SW etc which unsettled DS1. The paed discharged him but said that children often show more signs of AS when they get older.

Now DS1 is 8. Still obsessed with Thomas the tank engine and not dry at night. We have found that he is ok at home as long as things are predictable and decided in advance. At parents evening his teacher said he is very socially isolated. DH and I think it would be a good idea to see the paed again. How do we get a referral? We still see a HV for DS's 3, 4 and 5 but I'm not sure if she can refer DS1 now he's over 5. Should I ask the GP, school nurse (no idea who that is) or school senco?

You can ask for a referral from your GP, ellie.

It's good that you're so on the ball about your son's needs. I hope you get a referral sooner rather than later.

(My DS has AS, so I have been through the process, although we ended up having to see a paediatrician privately).

Yes, I agree with Polter wholeheartedly. We wasted years trying to get a diagnosis from CAMHS .
