What's the difference between ABA and verbal behaviour therapy?

Hi

Just spoke to the Caudwell charity who were really nice and helpful.

But they don't find verbal behaviour therapy just ABA. Just wondering what is the difference between the two methods?

Nothing- VB is ABA, it just puts more emphasis on language but having had both for my dd, it's the same, same principles, same techniques. The only thing that differs is that our programme focuses on language aquicision more.

So verbal behaviour is ABA

That makes no sense. Verbal behaviour IS ABA. Just call it ABA, because that is what it is.

It's like saying we don't fund bananas, only fruit.

VB is just a form of ABA which was developed after ABA first used. It was called Verbal Behaviour because it recognised that language was a skill that could also be taught in the way that other skills are, using applied analysis.

It's funny, over the last few years I've found myself using the term VB, and even sometimes "positive behaviour reinforcement" to school, LA etc rather more than saying "ABA". It's bizarre that mentioning "ABA" gets instant crossed arms and shaking heads, whereas "VB" or "positive behaviour reinforcement" gets vigorous nods and "yes yes yes-es" Wink

Thanks everyone, just needed clarification as the caudwell charity said they do not fund VBA, but only ABA. So was a bit confused.
