Just entering the system.... what now?

First appointment with Community Paediatrician this morning; my friendly, empathic, inquisitive ds6 has become very anxious, having meltdowns, being violent, struggling with friendships. There is obviously more that has led to the referral but that is the crux of it.

The feedback is that he has sensory processing problems and social integration problems, which are both causing anxiety for him having to deal with them. Dr is going to refer us asap to CAMHS and OT for assessments and will liaise with the school to "put stuff in place" for him.

I feel drained and tired. I was worried I was being a paranoid Mum / just a bad parent making him feel so bad, so there is an element of relief, but I feel so worried for him now someone has confirmed my fears.

I have come on here to ask what now? What do I need to be doing / reading before the appointments come through? Is there a possibility he could be diagnosed with something? She said that she doesn't believe he is autistic (neither do I) but could some sort of high functioning ASD be a possibility? What should I be saying at the first appointments, what are the brick walls I am likely to come up against? Should I talk to the SENCO or leave that to the paediatrician?

Sorry, so many questions!!! I just want to make sure I get the best help for my ds and nothing is missed out that can be done to make him happier.

It can all be very overwhelming.

Keep documenting all this. Video him regularly.

See what triggers the behaviors..

Keep a list of questions ready for appointments

salondon thanks for responding, you are right I do feel very overwhelmed. I want to get as much info under my belt but don't know where to start, as there seem to be so many issues to tackle, but I feel that first I need to take it all in, especially as it is all so "vague" at the moment.

I have ordered "The Out of Sync Child", and will keep on keeping a diary. I have only been diarising his behaviour, not possible triggers, so I will start doing that too.
