Verbal behaviour therapy- where do I begin

With much research and thinking. I'm willing for DS to start verbal behaviour therapy.

Where do I begin? Who do I go to? Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I don't have a lot of money, so was wondering if I could do most of the therapy myself. Has anyone does this before?

Thanks

VB is a very good form of ABA, and yes I think you can do some of it yourself but try and get yourself some high quality training - eg I think the charity Peach runs free parent courses. Also read "Let me hear your voice' and learn about motivation, teaching imitation skills and then mand training (which is just jargon for "demands" and teaching the child that different mouth sounds get different, good results (= speech) . I wrote a piece about how early VB worked for my severely autistic boy, can PM it to you?

Hi Adrianna,

Apply for Caudwe, you fill out a form online and they will reply. They give out £2000 for aba therapy. The process takes roughly a month so stRt as soon as you can.

DLA can also help towards it.

When I started, the biggest hurdle was money, we only had £900 until the funding was given to us. We made it possible because the consultant was very flexible with when we paid her when we were struggling, I think a few of them are quite understanding. The biggest set back is when the VB mapp (initial assessment) is being done as that can take hours.

You can definitely do some of the work yourself, I do sessions when my tutors can't come in, but with a small baby, it's quite hard to keep up.

Buy the vb mapp from Treezy website, it's around £50

If you join aba uk yahoo group, many people can give you feedback and recommendations.

Good luck, it's the best thing and the best money I have ever spent, the only regret I have is that I didn't start this hen she was 2

First thing I'd suggest is buy Robert Schram book on VB - Motivation and Reinforcment. Brilliant, is practically a bible for VB, and I'd say probably essential if you're going to start a programme, especially if you'll do much of the teaching yourself. Mary Lynch Barbera book good too. Both available on amazon.

Look at VB Community website for tutors and resources etc, as well as joining aba yahoo group. Do you have a consultant yet?
