Hiya all
Please please offer any help, I'm lost ...
Been doing reading on so many different things I feel overwhelmed

From 16 months I realised my son was different, he doesn't talk, interact, play with others, even notice others, he doesn't nod, wave or point, does not respond to his name and is getting very difficult now with tantrums.

I have been doing a lot of reading on mumsnet since my son was referred for autism assessments just over a month ago, I had to really push to get taken seriously, the Gp was useless and I finally managed to persuade the HV to come and see my son , after she observed him, she said he had many autistic traits but would need to be assessed.

I have read a number of mums on the site write about doing blood tests to determine vitamin, mineral ect level, please could you advise what I would need to request blood tests for and could my Gp refer me for them on NHS.

I have also read mums recommending supplements such as balance behaviour which is for 2 plus and vegapa which is 3 plus , could anyone recommend anything for my son at 21 months?

Any advice info will be much appreciated,

Thanks

Hi

Your son hasn't got an official diagnosis right? You should get your son to be assessed by a developmental ped. Who would do a number of tests to exclude many things that could be the reason behind your sons autistic traits.

Personally, I wouldn't rely heavily on biometric treatments ALONE( if that's what it's called) regarding testing for the high mercury levels etc, if that's what your on about. For some people they do work. Like gluten free diets, fish oil etc.

BUT!

You need to focus one- one time with your son. If his not pointing, teach him to point. One on one time and spending time with your son ,working on his needs, is the best treatment outcome ever.

I'll advise you to get the book "More than Just words" by Hanen.

Go on the site www.teachmetotalk.com- this speech therapist has the most intensive advice therapy treatments for parent to use who have kids with language and communication delays that I have ever seen.

The ICAN charity- google them.

National autistic charity- they don't really have a lot of information about kids- but is a great site with extensive stuff to read about autism.

I do believe biometric treatments work. But they are some parents that get too into it, spending ridiculous amounts of money. Just don't be that parent.

I don't think that the nhs doesl test for mineral and vitamin levels. I think these tests are usually done privatly.

You need to get the basics done first like a hearing test and a referral to a paediatrician before thinking about vitamin and mineral supplements. Gp's will be very limited in their knowledge about supplements and you would be better discussing it with the paediatrician but you may have to pay privately.
