Beds

Ds has a profiling bed, which has been great, but we have had problems recently with him trying to climb out (the side pulls up), he gets stuck and is in danger of falling. So we have tried having the side down, but then he falls out of bed, which leads to a disturbed nights sleep, plus of course he is in danger of hurting himself. When the side is down, he has also got up at stupid o clock wandering around upstairs, waking his sisters and potentially getting into danger.

Does anyone have any suggestions of different styles of bed available? It needs to have a head end that can be raised due to his reflux, preferably enclosed sides (although not sure how to get around the climbing out?). The ability for the whole bed to be raised has been very helpful for things like chest physio, and changing him.

Any suggestions??

Hi Hazey

We have this one:

www.theraposture.co.uk/cots/olaf

It does everything you want with the benefit of having extra high sides. They don't come cheap though. if you have a decent OT, they may fund it but in our case it took a hell of a lot of fundraising before we could get it.

Hope this helps

Wow inchstones, those beds are lovely. I have emailed the company for some more information, they are not far from us, so we might be able to go and see one.

We are trying to fundraiser for a trike at the moment, but will have to try and get a quote for a bed as well I guess!

I will try our OT, but when we got the bed we have now, I think they said that it was all that was available.

They do ex demo ones from time to time (at half price) so worth keeping an eye on the website

Does he have his own room? If so, take the side off, make safe his room and put a gate on his door.

StarlightMcKenzie · 12/09/2014 23:21

For Ds we just put a mattress on the floor with a few things under one end to raise it.

This is because we stored one in his room and we'd find him asleep on it by morning (if not on the floor).

Thankyou Star and zzzzz

Unfortunately we can't do anything to the actual bed as it is an ot issued hospital bed.

We also can't really do the floor thing, we tried this previous to being issued the bed we have now, but we were unable to raise the head of the bed sufficiently to help his reflux, and being on the floor was not helping with his chest.

Last night he woke up full of snot, and ended up in bed with us propped up on pillows and me - so a solution of sorts!

I think my view of Montessori has been tainted by the Montessori school I started at (which didn't suit me at all) and the Montessori nursery I looked at for ds (which don't suit him!) One of the nursery policies was that parents were requested not to send the children in with 'character clothing or bags', which I thought must be just something to do with that nursery, but my mum said it was the same at the school I went to for a short time, and was part of the Montessori ethos. Apologies if I got that wrong.

Bed wise it think we are going to ask the OT if there is anything else suitable, and if not then we will see what we can find secondhand.

I think my DH must have gone to a Montessori school. I caught him cleaning the bath with my face cloth.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 14/09/2014 09:42

so Montessori is really just common sense?

StarlightMcKenzie · 14/09/2014 10:03

Yes, but our culture isn't full of much common sense.

We visited our Aunt just recently and she had two £20k ornaments on display at toddler height. We have 3 children all under 7.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 14/09/2014 12:44

Grin Are you sure they weren't just tempting fate?
