I know you can download the new 2014 sen code of practice but at 280 pages long,it is a hefty document to print out.

Any ideas where you can request a hard copy from? My paper sen cop has been my 'Bible ' over the last few years and know it is time to start studying the ' New testament '

Hate reading on screen and think my poor printer would collapse printing out so many pages. Any links much appreciated.

My manager asked me the same question today, it seems like you get the choice of download or print Confused

Found this :

www.tsoshop.co.uk/bookstore.asp?FO=1159966&action=SearchResults

Think it is potentially available to buy - but not sure I've got the right thing?

Any idea if I'm on the right track?

I sent in a complaint in on the grounds that by making it download only, it effectively made it inaccessible to a lot of people. Going to the library to view online is not always possible for many families and the cost of printing it would be far too exorbitant for tons of people.

This was the response

Thank you for your email of 14 June, requesting a hard copy of the ‘Special educational needs and disability code of practice: 0 to 25 years’ guidance.

As part of the Department for Education’s contribution to the £6.2 billion of cross-government savings, the hard copy production of some departmental publications has been suspended.

For this reason, unfortunately, the guidance is only available to download and can be printed off at home. The guidance can be viewed at:

Once again, thank you for writing. I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to you on this occasion.

Suffice to say, I sent in a comment. All very discriminatory if you ask me.

I think several people and charities have pointed out that this is discriminatory, but clearly they aren't going to change their minds unless someone actually takes legal action. Does anyone know whether the Equality and Human Rights Commission have considered this?

This seems to be common with schools, LAs, and government departments. Basically, they are offloading their costs onto us parents, even though they can photocopy pages at say 0.1p a copy, whereas parents may be paying 10p a copy on their inkjet printer - when parents of disabled children are usually worse off financially than other families.

I thought that was the point of a progressive tax system - to take money off the rich, to redistribute to the poor. This policy is regressive and and discrimination, although I too know this has been pointed out to the Dept. of Education.

It may be worth asking Parent Partnership or, as they're now called, Independent Advice and Support Service www.iassnetwork.org.uk

After all, they were set up to provide info to parents Wink

If anyone tries this, I'd love to know if they succeed Grin

A couple of sellers on ebay have put together a spiral-bound copy of the new Code, but they are charging between £18 and £20, so don't know how much profit they are making.

I know someone who helped draft the new COP and when I asked them where I could get a hard copy, I was told that there were no hard copies in existence, even for the people that worked for the DoE. It is discriminatory.

bjkmummy · 07/09/2014 14:27

I reckon to print one off on my printer is going to cost me about £18 in ink and paper - wonder if the LA will bother printing them off - at each tribunal ive been to ive yet to see the LA with a copy of the code of practice

zen1 · 07/09/2014 15:11

I've recently purchased Douglas Silas' new e-book, 'A Guide to the SEN Code of Practice" which incorporates the new code and relevant legislation. It's 400 pages long, but I might go to a local printers and ask how much it would cost to print and bind a copy as I would prefer a hard copy. bjk the LA have probably not even read the new code, much less printed one off!

bjkmummy · 07/09/2014 17:13

I think zen1 it was always debateable where they had ever read the old code!!! I like your idea about the printers , its on my list to sort out a new code - my old code has been invaluable and I still need it as I head to tribunal again

zen1 · 07/09/2014 23:09

I know bjk, I've been following your tribunal journey(s). My old code was like my security blanket during the run-up to my tribunal earlier this year.
