Absense Seizure?

I don't know if anyone can help me. But I was talking with a friend and telling her a bit about Raeden. She'll zone off and her face will go slack and I won't be able to get her attention even if I turn her to look at me. She has her mouth hanging open and it's like someone just shut the light off in her head. This can last for up to 5 minutes. My friend told me this sounds like an absense Seizue or something like that? I'd appreciate any info anyone has.

does sound like it dh has epilepsy( so does dd)
He has the type you describe but they don't last that long
don't mean to worry you but 5 mins is a long time
I would recomend seeing your gp.
dd has to have intervention after 3mins

good luck
a tip is write down what happens and keep a record. It helps let the doc know how often and how long they are. I find I always forget when talking to doc.

TY! I'll definately do that. Really I don't think I would have thought of it at all. I'm running a little ragged right now

ds is waiting for an emi scan, he does the same thing, but they don't usually last that long, though he has had soem that have alsted much longer. the hv saw him having one while here visiting and said it looked like epilepsy. I don't think you need to worry too much about getting it on video, but a record would be a good idea and ask for a referral.

Kelly1978 · 18/09/2006 23:59

hmm, one paed mentioned emi, and one mentioneed eeg, so I'm not usre what we are waiting for actually! I never knew the term for it, so I'm finding more information now!

Hi Alisteal. I have no personal experience of epilepsy, however a close freind's son had it from the age of about 5. His symptoms were just as you described. The good news is that he was put on medication which, altho' it made him quite drowsy, did control the seizures, and now (he's 11), he seems to have grown out of it and has been off meds for about 2 or 3 years. Hope your dd also grows out of it with help.

Alisteal, my DS used to have absence seizures when small - he has grown out of it now, but they do need investigating as they (like other seizures) can cause damage if left uncontrolled.

They can be quite subtle and hard to spot, but what you have described would worry me. One of the common signs with absences is that they for some reason I don't know will turn their head to the right. My DS was put on epilim which had a negative effect on his development but the seizures did stop and he came off the meds after a year and has never fitted since.
