Hi, does anyone know of anywhere that specialises in clothing for children with poor hand function? My child has very limited use of his hands due to hemiplegia on one side of his body and what I view as neglect at birth on the part of medics which has left him with no muscle tissue on the non hemi side. Neither hand works properly as a result. Any suggestions really welcome he would love to be able to adjust his own clothing to gain independence.

Fledglings usually have things like this. Shoelaces and so on.

Thank you have been on the fledglings site there's loads of stuff I may order :)

Mine looks like this, though my thumb is wrapped round a bit more. Not a thing of beauty, but if it was something that after some fiddling round with helped him generally, they can make lovely carbon fibre splints.

I like xtenex laces, or lock laces - they aren't as weedy as some elastic laces and come in lots of colours

I think you may have persuaded me to try a private OT if I continue to have increasing problems with my hands, CMOT. I'm OK 90% of the time, but when something dislocates, I lose function for quite a while. Mostly in my dominant hand.

Never mind the dressing, it's not good with a boy who needs his hand held everywhere because I can't run as fast as him. (and is even bendier than me, so slips out of straps)

And NHS OT did try to be helpful but made me something even less useful than the elasticated supports I bought on Amazon.

Ouryve, the hand therapists at the Queen Victoria, East Grinstead were amazing when I saw them alongside Mr Belcher. They made me splints, compression gloves (custom fitted), and did loads of stuff in one appointment, and really understood.

Recently I went to Pace Rehab, and that was fab, but they less OT focussed

Unfortunately, I'm at the wrong end of the country for all that. I will have a look and see what's available more locally, though.

My OT is visiting next week will discuss with her thanks CMOT. Has anyone tried electrical stimulation on their hands? Was it worthwhile?
