Disabled Facilities Grants

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has been successful in getting a disabled facilities grant for an autistic child. Our child needs constant supervision to keep him safe. We want to use our conservatory so he can be supervised all the time when downstairs. It comes off our lounge and kitchen so he can be watched from both rooms whereas presently if we are in kitchen for example can't see him if he is in the lounge so someone has to stay in the room he is in. Presently though it is too cold or hot to use for half of the year so we want to have a lightweight tiled roof put on it to make it useable all year round. Do you think we stand a chance of getting a grant for this?

Have you seen this?

I think the best thing to do is to contact your local council for advice. The first thing that needs to happen is for an OT to come and visit you for an assessment. I think you can self refer but it may be better/quicker if you have someone to refer you such as a HV/GP etc.

Good luck.

I have self referred but his psychiatrist will write a supporting letter etc and I have lots of reports from his recent DLA review. He is on high rate care and mobility which says a lot in itself. They said it would take months for an OT to assess. It will be hard with him though as it is not a physical problem so not sure how relevant an OT assessment is. They asked lots of very loaded questions like "can you keep your child safe?" I think they have to decide within 6 months
