DS suddenly obsessed with nappies and keeps peeing on the carpets!

DS is 5 and has a dx of ASD. He's fully continent and has been toilet trained since 3.5ish.

The past few weeks however, I have caught him putting on DS2's nappies. A couple of times I have noticed he is wearing one under his clothes. If asked, he clams up and won't talk about it at all and I don't want to push him for fear of making it worse. he must be doing this quite regularly as i have noticed DS2's nappy stocks have dwindled really quickly this month. We have a nappy subscription from Amazon and I keep the spare packets in my room, though I'll be finding somewhere high to put them from now on!

He's peed in these nappies a couple of times and hidden them under his bed. But he's also peed on the carpets in my room and his room, possibly while putting the nappies on or off, as he doesn't have wet trousers or pants. Yesterday he peed in my room and then tried to cover it up by tipping loads of water all over it. He told me he'd spilt his drink and I believed him but this morning it's obvious there's urine on the carpet as it really smells.

Any help on how I can tackle this? And any tips on how to get the smell out of carpet? I'm pregnant at the moment so it smells really strong to me! I've scrubbed it with laundry detergent and sprayed it with Febreze but I'm sure I will still be able to smell it once it dries. Anyone know a good product for this sort of thing?

I just don't know what to say to DS. He clearly knows he's doing something wrong but I don't know the best way to handle it.

Thanks!

Sorry, I don't know the answer to this, but wanted to bump it for you.

We've had a couple of similar weeing on carpet issues from dts1 6 (ASD). I can't fathom why as he's been potty trained since he was 3.5, and has never done it before. I did a thread but only got one reply so can't help much on that front.

I've had the rug doctor on my carpet today as everything else I tried didn't work, it seems to have removed the smell... plan B is to sprinkle bicarb of soda and leave before hovering.

Good luck...

My much older ds with ASD/LD curiously has been doing the same, ( peeing in pads- he isn't dry at night yet so we have pads in his room but he usually refuses a pad at night) which I find mystifying and rather troubling. He also has accidents associated with this strange pad use. I can only assume its either a comfort/regression thing or perhaps because it's more comfortable or secure for some reason. He likes to dress up in his pirate/ other dress up outfits as he winds down for bed so it could be a sensory thing as I'm sure the dressing up is sensory. I now store the open pads in the Lino floored bathroom, in the hope he will prefer to use the loo, and if not spills will be easier to clean up. He too has been hiding wet pads- and when I find them just says they are from last night. I know they are not because I check for wet pads daily and umm have a well trained nose for them!
As for getting the smell out of carpet and furnishings, I find the best way is to dilute with weak carpet shampoo several times and dry off each time with a towel I then wash. Then i finish with dilute lavender baby bathWe then get a wet carpet smell but it beats the smell of stale wee!

I've been told the sprays sold for pet urine cleaning are supposed to work on human too. Our local pet shop has a couple of options.

I haven't actually tried it though as a family member offered us a carpet shampooer, so we usually drag that out.

Thanks everyone.

Very interesting that you should talk about dressing up, magso. DS has recently become quite obsessed with dressing up like Prince Hans from Frozen, to the point where I'm trawling ebay looking for exactly the right epaulettes!

He's starting ss in September after a year out of school and a very messy end to ms education, so I'm wondering if it could be a regression thing. He coped fine on his induction day but his overall behaviour has really deteriorated in the past couple of weeks.

Thanks for the carpet cleaning tips too. It's had numerous scrubs but I can still smell the urine so I will definitely be trying them all. We're in a private rental and I want our deposit back!
