How to teach your child to indicate need for potty?

We were trying to use sign language to teach our son how to indicate to us he needed to "go", but his fine motor isnt very good. Any good ideas on how to create a communication between child and parent for the need to go potty?

Our boy wips off his nappy now for no.1 and no.2 he obviously is ready and will sit on the potty, but doesnt always go. He fiddles when he has to go number 1, and then we put him on the potty and he will go, but often we cant catch him in time. Bit difficult now that school has started. Anyone ideas on a picture for potty or a gesture or some such??

thanks

Makaton for toilet is index and middle fingers tapped on opposite collarbone I believe.Would he do that?

dd can't do the sign very well so she has a toilet symbo; on her tray and if she is out of her chair she putsh her hand between her legs. this seems to work very well for her.
I think you just need to find a way he can tell you. when he has mastered that you can always fine tune it then

I would use a big picture (PEC-style or photo or out of a mag) and pair it with using the potty every time. I mean, you use it at first every time he goes and then start to prompt him to use it and hopefully, switch over. Sounds simple doesn't it !! I think a picture (or as many as you might need) is the best way for a child to initiate with toileting.
