Sew them on the outside? Or eg inside the turned back bit of cuff, or inside a pocket?

Or just use a Sharpie, write it on the seam, and reapply as necessary.

lougle · 17/06/2014 16:50

With DD3, I used iron-on labels attached to the clothing label, then sewed the clothing label flush with the garment.

ouryve · 17/06/2014 16:51

Sharpie.

Sharpie pen here too

Spherical · 17/06/2014 17:43

Oh, and it is not trivial at all. It the seemingly small stuff that can be the toughest to get round.

AlarmOnSnooze · 17/06/2014 17:47

Name labels are absolutely NOT trivial. They are the thing that helped ds2 accept her school uniform when she started - she only wore red at the time, and there was no red in her uniform at all. I got her name tapes in red, with a picture of a flower (uniform very drab after red flowery clothes!) and it helped her transition as se knew she was still wearing red... It's the little things that make the world go round!

Ineedmorepatience · 17/06/2014 18:04

I agree, labels are never trivial!!

If I cant write on it, I generally sew Dd3's along the seam of whatever item of clothing it is.

If possible I write with a laundry marker. Shirts and polo tops get written on behind the buttons.

For Cub camp we had to write in socks and pants too which was fun Grin

StarlightMcKenzie · 17/06/2014 19:01

The rule seems to be at dd's school:

Don't label anything. When it gets lost go to lost property and fish out one of the million unlabelled items similar to the one lost. Repeat weekly/daily.

hazeyjane · 17/06/2014 19:27

Thankyou for the suggestions.

The tshirt printer thing sounds like genius, zzzzz - and I especially like the idea of putting something on that ds can recognise as his. I think it is going to be a struggle to get ds to wear uniform full stop, but if I can do something like put a skull and crossbones next to his name, it might help.

The trouble I find with sharpies, is that unless you write it on the label, it goes through to the other side on polo shirts.

I have tried sewing labels flat, but he just worries and picks at it constantly.

I'll have a look at the tshirt printer stuff, as I could use that for the girls uniform as well.

Is he ok with buttons? Attach a tag have saved no end of my dc's clothes and things from going astray. They can be fixed to a seam like the spare button on things. Although I prefer to attach them to the bottom cuff on to shirts and jumpers as they are visible then and the things most likely to walk. On trousers/skirts I put them next to the waist adjusters.

AgnesDiPesto · 17/06/2014 20:52

An ink stamp?

hazeyjane · 18/06/2014 09:53

Buttons or anything like that usually get chopped off too so I don't think the attachy tag thing would work.

Ooooh I like the stamp, now I am in 2 minds about the stamp or tshirt printing gubbins!

laundry pen on the hem. bit of a bugger if you happen to have black uniform.

chimphead · 20/06/2014 08:04

Hi. I use these, they stick almost anywhere. I just stick them on inside of jumper or polo as all labels have been cut off. They can also be used on bottles, bags ect. No sewing or ironing. . They are plastic but DS has not complained. I even used on DS bike

How about this?

notapizzaeater · 21/06/2014 16:36

Sharpie pens, just write on the clothes. Saves hours of time.

Jacksterbear · 23/06/2014 12:44

I use the iron-on ones from here. They are plasticky and sort of melt on when you iron them, leaving no sticking out bits / rough edges etc - like the print on a t-shirt.

BiddyPop · 25/06/2014 12:31

I get iron on labels from a company called mynametags - it's online and has loads of options for little pictures as well as the names. DD has label issues but these go very flat - the only issue is all her DCousins go around with her lables on their clothes when handed down Grin.

We started with just the name, then DD liked the symbols so we've had a set of pirates, and currently using a soccer ball. They also do sticky labels the same, so they are handy for school books etc, and give a unity to them all.
