a study out today claims older (over 40)dads have a much higher incidence of autistic kids. My dh was 39 when ds was born. Am interested to know how this study holds up in the real world of mumsnet!

"The UK and US researchers examined data on 132,271 children and said those born to men over 40 were six times more at risk than those born to men under 30. "

"Older parental age has previously been linked to abnormalities in the brain development of children. "

"Among those whose fathers were between 15 and 29 when they were born, the rate of autism was six in every 10,000, rising to nine in every 10,000 when fathers were aged 30 to 39 (1.6 times higher).

In the group whose fathers were aged 40 to 49, the rate rose to 32 in 10,000 (5.75 times higher).

The rate appeared to be even higher when fathers were aged over 50, but the researchers said the sample size was very small.

The mother's age did not appear to influence the chances a child would have autism.

The researchers suggest there may be a genetic fault which is more common with age. "

I don't think we're going to be able to rack up a study of 130000, even on MN

My son has ASD and his dad was 27 when we got pregnant. I was 24.

Dh was 31 when ds1 was born and 34 when ds2 was born. Both boys are autistic. He was 37 when dd was born and so far she seems NT.

They presented this as shock horror on the news without the figures... 6 times the risk! Then they mentioned 32 in 10,000... Isn't that a much lower risk than winning one of the new lottery games?

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 06/09/2006 18:50

Dh was 29 when DS1 was born

DH 26 when dd was born

dh was 53 when ds1 was born so certainly possibly 'true' although was even older when the other two were born and they are both NT.

my ex was over 40 when all 4 of my children were born and none are autistic.
