suggestions for packed lunch - very fussy eater

Hello

My Ds does not eat very many foods.

potato and beans
tomato soup
toast and jam
toast and Marmite
jam sandwiches
jam and banana sandwiches
banana
raisins
yogurt
chocolate

occasionally plain pasta with grated cheese.
occasionally chips

For packed lunch he is getting bored with jam sandwiches. I can not think what else to give him. His motor skills are not good so I don't think he would manage a flask with soup or beans in it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheese sandwiches?
Marmite sandwiches?

Jacksterbear · 02/06/2014 20:49

Will he eat cheese (cream cheese or grated cheese) in a sandwich?

Banana and chocolate spread sandwich? Or just banana sandwich?

Tub of pasta (plain fusilli works well as finger food if he's not good with cutlery)? Would he eat little chunks of cheese from a tub? Will he eat breadsticks or crackers?

sorry, I did not explain myself well. I am studying for an exam and not thinking clearly. The list of food is everything he eats out of school.

But for packed lunch he takes jam sandwiches, banana and raisins. I can't think of how he could take the other things at school without a lot of mess and difficulty.

He is not eating the sandwiches. But says he does not want to change what he takes. He likes to always have the same thing. So not sure what to do.

The pasta as finger food is a great idea. thank you! I had not thought of that. Just plain pasta?

He won't eat anything crunchy so crackers and bread sticks are out.

I tried cheese sandwiches and Marmite sandwiches. For both, he ate them on day one then started leaving them. Maybe I should try them again.

He eats enough outside of school so probably he is OK with just the banana and raisins.

I will try the pasta. I think he might go for that. He loves eating pasta with his fingers.

forgot to ask, how would I give him banana sandwich? He would need to put the banana on himself wouldn't he? He would like banana sandwiches but I don't think he would cope well with putting the banana on.

Yes plain pasta. Grated cheese on it would be messy which was why I was wondering whether he'd eat little chunks of cheese, either in with the pasta or in a separate tub. But failing that, the plain pasta would be a good carb portion to fill him up.

deadwitchproject · 02/06/2014 21:45

Would he eat a hard cracker with a meat paste (like Jacobs cracker) in place of a sandwich sometimes? That way he can get some protein and carbs.

I think brioche is a great idea polter but Ds has refused to try them in the past. I think I will buy some and see if I can persuade him. They would be handy for snacks. what ones does your ds like, is it chocolate?

thanks jacksterbear I am going to try pasta and cubes of cheese tomorrow. I will show him it tomorrow morning and see what reaction I get. He will probably say no but it is worth a try.

deadwitch thank you for the suggestion but there is no way he would try that. He won't eat any crackers or biscuits or any pastes, meat, veg.

thanks zzzzz I will Google. You are probably right, I have a feeling ds will want the jam sandwiches to stay. Will see what reaction I get with the pasta and cheese tomorrow.

What about wraps? Start with the same fillings for sandwiches that he will tolerate. And then perhaps (slowly) if he has accepted the different bread type he may branch out to different fillings? Or if nothing else he may at least eat them with the sandwich fillings he does like but is bored of in sandwich format?!

And what about different types of jam?

Smooth peanut butter?

I used to love salad cream sandwiches...

tacal · 02/06/2014 22:02

yes definitely, I am sure he will like to chose one and be super excited about it being delivered. That's a great idea.

hi moomummy not sure he would try a wrap. I have a lot of different types of jams and fruit spreads. It is worth trying on a wrap. Ds runs away from things that look like salad cream. He can not look at them. He can't look at some foods, can't be near crunchy foods and hates the texture of a lot of foods.

His sandwiches are made with warbuton thins. I will see if he would try a warbuton wrap as it could be the bread he is fed up with. thank you.

We usually put the remains of dinner into ds' lunch. He ate it when he was relaxed and happy so it is associated with an okay time and therefore it doesn't make him anxious at school.
