Advice for request to drop school year and go part time due to health

My DD hasn't been in school since Xmas due to a health problem. She has been very ill, has had major brain surgery and is slowly recovering. I've come to the conclusion that it would be best for her from next Sept to repeat a year (she's in infants) and attend part time (mornings only). This plan has only come into my head this evening, but I don't know where I stand with the English school system to request this. Is this one that would be at the head's discretion? Is the answer likely to be no? Do you know of any charities who could help me sort this one out?
Many thanks.

They don't usually let a child repeat a year, they like them to stay in the correct age group. It's down the the discretion of the LA not the head afaik.
Part time timetable shouldn't be a problem. Lots of children with SEN have been part time although its usually the school who requests it because they can't cope rather then the parent!
I do know a lady whose daughter had a brain injury and spent over a year out of school before going back part time as she was too tired to go full time. Parent partnership supported her to get the timetable in place.

Get in touch with the SENCO or the SEN team at your LA to discuss your plan and see what they think.
IPSEA is probably the best support charity when it comes to SEN or maybe Cerebra as they support children with brain illnesses.

I agree that schools don't often agree to a bear being related because at some point they need to go back to their correct one which could cause more problems.

DS did do a half term or so part time - he is at a special school anyway, but had been very unwell and although he was better he just couldn't cope with a full day. We just sorted it out with the school - who agreed that it seemed sensible because sending him in for a whole day just meant that I ended up being called to fetch him.

That's a year being repeated not a bear being related

a part time timeatable isn't usually a problem.
If you do want her to drop back a yr make sure it is agreed with the LA & formally approved otherwise any informal arrangement will cease once she reaches the age where she is due to move on to the next school.
This could mean she would be made to move to secondary without having completed her final yr of primary iykwim.

Thanks for the info and help to get me started with this. Much appreciated. The bear being related gave me a good laugh too, starfishmummy :-)
