Dyslexia diagnosis - what should happen now?

My DS2 is in year 2 and has been struggling with his literacy work since starting school, falling steadily further and further behind his peers. In April he had a private assessment by an educational psychologist and was diagnosed with Specific Learning Difficulties due to developmental dyslexia. The psychologist's report gave a number of recommendations e.g. for one-to-one support for reading and implementation of an IEP. I was wondering what needs to happen now? Does he need to have a statement of special educational needs? Is that the same thing as an IEP or can he have an IEP without a statement? Will the school organise things or do I need to do anything myself? I'm a bit clueless about the way things work and the school isn't very forthcoming.

If he only needs 1:1 for reading then the school should be able to meet this out of their own budget via school action.
You should arrange a meeting with school to set up an IEP and discuss what support they will put in place for DS. You don't need a statement to have an IEP.
You shouldn't have to set all this up yourself but a lot of schools aren't very forthcoming with putting support in place when it will cost them money and a bit of effort!
There is loads of stuff on IPSEA website about IEPs, School Action and Statements.

Thanks. I think the report recommended he should be statemented at level 2 but I don't know if the school would do that as they haven't been very supportive so far.

You can apply for a statement yourself, you don't have to wait for school to do it for you.
They might refuse to assess though if he hasn't had any input via school action first. It depends how much he is struggling in school. I don't think they would give a statement just for 1:1 reading support as this could be easily met from the schools budget. If the cost of the support is 6k or less then the school can fund this without a statement.

Hopefully we'll hear something from the school this week as they've been sitting on this for a couple of weeks now. I get the feeling it isn't a priority for them at all.
