Love Actually

Did anyone who saw Love Actually notice Colin Firth using the word "spaz"? I'm so upset and angry about it I have emailed Richard Curtis' agent, and asked them to pass it on for a reply. Also copied it to Scope, to see what they think?

Am really disappointed that a writer as successful as RC feels he needs to lower himself that much. It's bad enough anyone saying it, but to put it in a film being seen right around the world?! How dare he make fun of people for sometihng out of their control! If he made a racist slur, insulted a religion would that be allowed? I don't think so.

I've noticed a few films recently taking the p out of disabled/sn people. Is it because there are so many rules and regulations for every other group, but none protecting the disabled?

Sorry I am really really upset by it. I rewound the tape just to be sure, and it's been on my mind since last night.

i haven't seen the film but today had to deal with two students using that term towards two other students..... i went ballistic.

Anyway Lou - brilliant email and I really wanted to watch the film but now will not out of principle.

Hope you get a reply......

eidsvold · 22/03/2004 16:10

be more than happy to write and explain why I will not be watching the film - if someone can send me the email addy.

CountessDracula · 22/03/2004 16:11

I won't be watching it because it's a load of pap. This is the final nail in the coffin though - inconceivable that they could use that sort of expression.

lou33 · 22/03/2004 16:21

Associate Agent I just copied it to is [email protected] , katharine vile.

I haven't had a reply either.

lou33 · 22/03/2004 18:35

Just had this reply :

Dear Louise,

We have forwarded your email on to Richard Curtis?s office.

I will contact you if they get back to me, but I would stress that he is extremely busy at the moment so a response may not be immediate.

Best wishes,

Katharine Vile

lou33 · 23/03/2004 18:54

Nothing here. I think I'll try the second e-mail address you posted.

WideWebWitch · 23/03/2004 19:13

Nope. May hassle them. Along the lines of not only did you use an offensive word, you can't even be bothered to reply to me, rant, moan you're rude etc.

Just resent mine.

slight update.

Just had a very long and sympathetic call from a member of Scope. I sent the only contact name I have a copy of my email, and she called me today. She called the press office to see ig they had heard anything regarding the use of the word, and they had. Apparently they contacted Mr Curtis when the film was first released, giving him advice of the appropriate use of language. She doesn't know if he responded though, but will find out. If he hasn't then SHAME ON HIM.

Anyway she was full of praise for my email, and has asked if she can send it to the press office, which obviously I said yes to. She has asked them to respond to me too, and let me know any outcomes.

Still haven't heard from RC though.

I was wondering why this hadn't been picked up before Lou so that's interesting, especially since the theatrical release was so long ago. No reply here either.

lou33 · 26/03/2004 13:33

I might try and track him down via other means, if I haven't heard anything by next week.

coppertop · 27/03/2004 12:46

Still no news here and I sent my e-mail a week ago.

Have you found out yet if RC bothered to reply to Scope when they first advised him about that word (can't even bring myself to type it)?

lou33 · 27/03/2004 15:47

Not yet. My contact only called yesterday, so I guess it might take some time for the press office to read my email and reply to me. I am wavering between hopelessness and outrage. Not going to leave it though. Can you see me on tv holding a demo outside any future RC films?
