So SALT saw my 2 year old and has sent her report, and lists the following areas of concern:
limited attention and listening skills;
play skills delayed/atypical;
language comprehension delayed/atypical;
expressive language delayed/atypical
social skills delayed/atypical
Does this sound like autism?

Hi Knackered and welcome to the board there could be a few red flags there What do you think?

Is he/she just 2 or nearer 3? Is he/she meeting other milestones?

knackeredknitter · 26/04/2014 21:12

Hi,thanks for replying and the welcome Smile
He is 2yrs and 5 months. Sometimes I do think he might be, but then he has good days when he will point and request while looking directly at me. He does not speak, and he doesn't babble at me or his siblings, but he sometimes babbles to himself, so then I think he might be. He has no imaginative play, and likes to line things up, so maybe he is, just so unsure.

He sat up, smiled, etc all on time, but did walk and crawl late

Are the Proffs offering a multi disciplinary assessment?

There is very little chance of him being diagnosed with Asd if he doesnt have it. Lots of people on here have had to fight to get their children's difficulties taken seriously.

You could do some reading while you decide what to do or while you wait for referrals to come through.

There is an online checklist calles M chat, I think that is for toddlers. If you dont find it put a specific question on the board and someone will help you find the right one.

Good luck Smile

Worth doing MCHAT.
General developmental / language delays and disorders and autism can look quite similar in a 2 year old. MCHAT helps pick out the more autism type symptoms. The pointing and sharing things (even without speech) is good. Its the quality of interacting with others - if you play peek a boo or sing an action song with him on your knee will he laugh and make eye contact and join in (even without speech) or be uninterested? Is he more interested in things than people?
My DS has autism and ticked all these boxes at 2. My nephew was delayed and also ticked all these boxes at 2 but after a year of speech and play therapy caught up and at 7 is typical (although more sporty than academic!).
If you find language hard to understand that will impact on play and social skills because you find it harder - but in some children when the language improves the play and social side does too and the atypical autism like symptoms go away.
DS did the early skills like smiling and sitting but crawling and walking was late. He also lost skills around 2 and lost speech and social interest, stopped pointing. Some of the autism symptoms like lining things up didn't start until he was over 2.5 and he carried on going backwards for several months.
Early intervention helps a lot so push on with assessments / reading up on interventions etc (can borrow books for free from cerebra lending library) you should be able to get speech and play therapy (portage) while you are waiting. Therapy can't harm him, the worst that would happen is therapy is given to a child who turns out not to need it.
Hanen books It takes 2 to talk (language delay) or more than words (autism) are good place to start to understand what you can do to help.

Thanks for the link, that was helpful. He has actually not pointed at all today, and dam wondering if he is not actually not pointing but just moving his fingers in front of his face. Confused
He never plays peek-a-boo or want to join in with action songs, definitely not interested
I did the Mchat and he scored 16, apparently 'high risk'
I will push for a referral to the multi-disciplinary team
Thanks for all the advice

Good luck knackered and be kind to yourself, it is a worrying time for you.

Always remember he is your lovely little boy whatever happens and nothing will change that.

Take care Flowers
