Tic side effect of ADHD meds

Hello, one of my twin boys with ADHD has developed a physical tic since taking methylphenidate. The tic has got worse & he is now self conscious & annoyed about it . We've had a 2 wk break from meds over Easter (argh caravan in new forest argh!) but tic just about the same. Has anyone else had experience of this please? I'm worried that it is here to stay. We have a CAMHS review nxt week & will talk about poss changing meds- any idea if tic will go & if so, how long it takes???

My ds was on Concerta 30 mg. He developed physical & vocal tic but he also has a diagnosis of ASD.

He's now on Equasym XL 30 mg, the side effects are generally not as bad &:the tics have stopped.

I don't stop Ds9 meds in the holidays, is there a reason for your ds not to take his medication in the holidays?

Thank you Piggi, that reassuring. My 2 are almost 10 and on Medikinnet XL40mg. It's good to know that a different med might stop it, as DS finds it v distressing & they start secondary in a year. We stopped meds for Easter hols on advice from CAMHS to see if tics would stop. But because of concerns about them not eating much when medicated, they initially didn't have meds in holidays, but, we usually do give it to them in hols now- otherwise it's hell.
Does your DS have any trouble sleeping?

Ds used to stop in the hols when ds didn't eat well.
Nowci have the opposite problem & -he's actually overweight!

My ds has always had problems sleeping. The meds have made this much much worse. He's on 6 mg of melatonin as well. It isn't very effective but better then nothing.

I resisted the pressure of medicating ds but literally he's totally unmanageable unmediated. Even on meds he has been excluded from a Special school. He's very difficult. I'm in week 3 of Easter Holidays & mentally totally rinsed out!

Sounds like you have your hands full, what comes after exclusion?
My twins are hard work, without meds they wouldn't get anything out of school. But then of course the meds wear off after school- such fun, and there's 2 of them, it's like world war three. Hubby works abroad so it's just me in the week.
Have you found any support apart from meds? There's zilch around here (Sussex). I'm with you on the rinsed out!
