Aargh! Dd trialled a new milk for 3/4 feeds and it has totally backed her up. Normally she has no problems opening her bowels.
She hasn't pooed since Tuesday, so it's 6 days. We've been giving her movicol and have given her 4 sachets today but still no decent output.
She's not tolerating her feeds ( via gastrostomy) she very moany and uncomfortable so today I've just given her lots of fluids. She didn't sleep well at all last night,we had to give her a sedative to calm her down.
Can anyone help??

Micralax or glycerine suppositories from the bottom end? Sometimes we have to attack from both ends to get things moving.
Movicol will do the trick eventually but sometimes it takes a LOT of sachets (DS2 went up to 12!) to shift things.

Sounds like the new feed is not going to agree with her:( Hope she gets some relief soon!

Are the suppositories prescription only? 12 sachets .. Crikey. At least it worked eventually. Thanks for the response.

We too have this problem with DS I find if a glycerine suppository doesn't work we resort to Dulcolax suppositories you can buy both OTC at Boots, you can get paediatric and adult size (Dulcolax)Good luck!!

Movicol took about 10 days for us to work. We went up to 8 sachets. I would persevere with movicol and increase the sachets.

Can you give her some orange or prune juice via her gtube? That sometimes works. The Movicol will do its job, just be prepared for when it does??

I have a friend in Italy with 3 girls, she sticks a rosemary twig up their bottoms- has worked for generations in her family apparently...

Just to update we had "lift off" after 5 sachets of movicol! We are now weaning our way down the dose on a steady 1 sachet a day for a few weeks. Our paediatrician has told me it's not uncommon on kids with low muscle tone to encounter these problems. Dd is much happier now she is regular. Phew! Thanks all.

Toots, I feel your pain. You see them getting more and more uncomfortable and ratty. They eat and drink less and less. We tend to refer to it in this house as 'The Eagle has landed!', when DS4 has finally done a poo. Confused

Sally and toots same problem
Here dd2 chronicly holds her poo it is obviously disstresses her

Since moving to blended diet via gastrostomy tube, constipating is a thing of the past. If you're interested let me know and I will point you in the right direction Smile

SallyBear · 01/05/2014 10:04

I'm glad to hear that you're doing a blended diet Sneeze. So many dieticians are anti it. God knows why.

geeandfeesmum · 01/05/2014 14:58

We were advised to put DD on a dairy free diet. I was sceptical but it definitely worked. She is now back on dairy and has been ok so far.

I keep thinking about the blended diet sneeze. I'm a bit scared of change and also how much time it would take to prepare the food. What direction would you point me in then? Maybe it's time I took control of her diet.
