DS has to go to mainstream...

My DS has to go to mainstream this year, simply because the statement would not be done in time... and have to wait for the new EHC plan.

My DS has a severe language delay, can the school hire a speech therapist for my DS without the statement??

Have you applied for SA?

I think I remember that you started statementing and stopped? I would crack on with statement - until September they have to offer traditional statement route as well as EHCP, or if you decide to go for EHCP you don 't have to wait until Sept, you can apply now.

Does your ds have TAC meetings? A lead professional or anyone in rl who can guide you through this?

I can't remember if you were going for a speech unit or ms with support?

Hi Everyone

@ hazeyjane yes I stopped as my speech therapist said I should wait till he get his diagnosis, but if I continue with the statement, it would be done by october and would be turned into a ECH plan...

I didn't know I can apply for the ECH plan now! I thought I had to wait till september.

I'm going to speak to parent partnership again, to help assist me. For now, my DS has to go mainstream, but I'm hoping... before he goes into year one he would go to a specialist unit...I'm hoping he may get into a speech unit.. but I doubt it because of his ASD diagnosis...but really want him to go to the ICAN meath school.

you can still apply. I would think you apply for SA but if it is finalised, then your DS will end up with an EHP instead of an statement.

Even if it takes 6 months, then you should have the EHP in place by Autum.

Please book a callback with IPSEA asap ..... or contact an advocate - there's plenty out there, just google advocates for sen children. Do not approach Parent Partnership as they are employed by the LA so might not be as impartial as they say they are.

Please do not wait any longer, All the best!

Nennypops · 18/04/2014 08:35

Definitely get that application for SA in now. There's a precedent on the IPSEA website.

Some LAs are telling porkies in saying everything stops till September. Ignore them.

Also think you should apply for statement ASAP - regardless of whether or not your DS has ASD diagnosis, he still needs support in place for when he starts school. Does your speech therapist think its ok for him to start school with nothing in place, I'm a bit perplexed about her advice. I've heard of cases where the kids can say as little as your / my son getting 32 hours support.

The ASD diagnosis needn't be a barrier to speech unit, though it certainly complicates matters. My DS has ASD diagnosis (as well as verbal dyspraxia) and is going to a unit in sept. based on what I've heard from our local unit, whether or not unit accepts a child with ASD depends on whether they think the "primary need" is speech and Langauge. On a practical level they will look to see if he will participate in and respond to speech therapy, ie will he pay attention to and look at speech therapist? Does he understand instructions?

Don't know much about speech therapy in mainstream but I would think the best way to ensure he gets it is through getting it written into the statement/ehcp. Sounds like you have been given misleading advice, as others have said you don't need to wait for the ehcp.

Another possible way into a unit could be to contact your nearest unit(s) directly and explain situation. The unit near us accepted a little boy on an "assessment placement" while his statement was pending, the request for SA only went in a couple of months before he was due to start school.

These LA employees give such false rubbish information to parents, it's appalling.

Statement doesn't have to wait for diagnosis. You can ask for one whenever you feel your child needs one.

The school can hire/ assign anyone for your child if they feel the need. A good school would do so without a statement.
