I don't believe that my son has autism...

He has been diagnosed with autism....but I really do not think he has it. When they were assessing my DS they said he was a very complicate case, but he had just about enough of the criteria to be diagnosed with autism....

I generally believe that my son has a language delay and ADD...

I am not in denial. But none would believe me anyway and they cannot take away the ASD diagnosis and I am positive that it is not ASD.

Well...if I tell people this they would think that I'm in denial. So I'm not going to mention this to any profession.

Don’t give up. You’re not alone

Hello! I'm the original poster. Thanks for
re-enacting the thread. It's funny when you read back over the years about your thought process especially when we first enter the world of ASD/ Special needs... but yes, my first DC whose thread that I wrote about is defined ASD 😂. To be fair though, he does have some good social skills which was why I didn't think it couldn't be possibly ASD but yes, he has ASD through and through.

There is something fascinating about this post - thanks so much for coming back to it OP! So useful for all of us seeking others experiences for the benefit of our DC.

Did i not ask you if you want your child to be diagnosed and did you agree to the assessment? I was asked if i wanted my son to be diagnosed and i said yes even though the doctor wasn't certain and the assessment wasn't by multiple doctors so they are now doing a genetics test.

My sister refused for her son to be diagnosed years ago when he was around 5 and he is doing really well in life now with no sign of Autism at all. He is 24, lives with his wife and graduated from engineering.

I just wanted to thank OP as well, my DS is 10 turning 11, school has twice raised the question of ASD testing, first time about 4 years ago I had a mini-break down and it wasn't discussed again until this month. Testing looks like it will happen 1 year from now, but I am not convinced it's the right way to go. So it's torturous at the moment. DS is an ex-prem born at 24 weeks, has hydrocephalus caused by prematurity and all the associated developmental delays and risks that come with that. I don't get the impression at all that the experts currently dealing with him are looking at him holistically. Thank you again OP. And on it goes.
