Hi autumnsmum here I thought I would start another thread for those of us with Dcs starting reception in September. I have two older children and dd2 who has autism and will be going into the reception class of her special school where she attends nursery in September . I would love to hear from others

I'm sorry about your statement woes hazey

I just got my proposed statement and it gave my dd part time hours with a TA, not 1:1 btw as "she's a capable child", this being a child with moderate language delay and attention deficiency!

I'm going to have to make my amendments and then probably an appeal as I know they will reject it sigh

We got our local mainstream school which is a relief as it's so close by and seems to know a fair bit on asd.

To be quite honest I want her to stay in nursery for the next year but that's just not possible! I just pray and pray that the LA and school agree with my proposal ( how luckly will that be I wonder?)

Excuse me while I go cry into a pillow

All of our SA reports were due in this week so we now have the long daunting wait for the panel decision. Is it after 6 weeks usually?

On a positive note we got a copy of the ed psych report last week and it talked a lot about our DS needing high levels of supervision, access to specialist educational programmes within a mainstream setting and individual support during group work and at all times when affected by his condition (which is sporadic).

Fingers crossed for a statement now...

hazeyjane · 02/05/2014 18:25

Babiki - if a statement isn't issued we will keep him at preschool as long as possible and HE as a last resort, he would not be able to cope in ms at all without a full time 1-1, and he can't go to the special unit he needs to go to, without a statement.

In his latest SALT report it describes him as having less language than a 6 month old baby (he has no words at all) severe learning difficulties and no interest in playing with other children. That is not even taking into consideration his sensory difficulties, mobility problems (which are worsening) and health issues.

Sammy - sorry the statement isn't up to much, hope you can get something sorted in time.

Large glass of Wine anyone??

babiki · 02/05/2014 18:40

Hazey I understand and have similar plan. It is shocking even quite severe children there is no guarantee they will get the help they need.

I met a lady recently whose child is starting in September - she just started crawling, non- verbal, on baby food... She is starting in MS with no statement :(. The lady didn't even know what Statement is. She just assumed her dd will get support at school :(

autumnsmum · 02/05/2014 18:45

Babiki and hazey that's terrible the paediatrician that deals with that poor girl and her mum should have advised pointed them in the right direction

Been lurking on this thread for a while, but just got letter DD got a place at the school for children w severe ASD - so so relieved. Most professionals involved with us recommended this school and we immediately felt it Was the right place for her but its tiny so places hard to get and she's a young starter. Goes all the way through to adulthood although they reassess annually but we're in. Can't lie that seeing young children going to the ms local gives me a lump in the throat but...
I'm hoping Those of you still waiting get good news and wish strength and wisdom to Those staring down the barrel of needing to Challenge decisions. I wish it wasn't all such a fight.
Hug to you hazey - thanks for your message on my thread in SN chat - wish I had something wise to say but it just sucks sometimes

autumnsmum · 05/05/2014 13:26

For what it's worth I felt sad reading about people getting there mainstream places but dd2s school is far and away the best place for her

Wave to autumn - thanks to you too for the support. I was in such crisis. Glad to hear you've got a place too.
Babiki - that example is just chilling I can't believe no place has been offered to that child

hazeyjane · 05/05/2014 19:44

Nice to see you FirstTimer. So glad that your girl has a place in a good school. Hope things are moving forward for you.

I wish there was a decent special school which went through to 18 close to us. The nearest is a good 50 minute drive away, they do provide transport, but, nearly 2 hours a day travelling seems so much. The special unit ds should be going to only goes up to juniors, so in 3 years time we will have to consider it again (maybe it will be better when he is a bit older). There is a special unit in the local juniors, but it has not got a very good reputation.

MooMummyMoo · 07/05/2014 15:13

We are in at our Special School! Yippee!! Had the statement through in today's post. So that is a big weight off our minds.

The statement itself is rubbish but I am saving that argument for the next review...just wanted to get the school named first before complicating matters.

Anyway, big first step achieved! Roll on September :)

autumnsmum · 07/05/2014 15:18

Moomummymoo congratulations that's so brilliant ! Knowing my dd2 is going to sp sch has been a huge weight off my mind

MoomummyMoo - well done, fantastic news.

Should find out about statement this week, initial yes/no. A friend who started the process for her ds months after we did, got the proposed statement last week, so pleased for her. Stunned though that we seem to have hit so many walls and delays.

Will be so pleased to get this bit over. Anyone else had any news?

Skimmingstones · 11/05/2014 20:25

Hi all so great to hear about school places firsttimer and moomummymoo, so good to hear good news Smile

Have had draft statement and agreed to it. Anxious wait now for final statement to see if there is a place at chosen sp sch.

Wishing you all the best hazey too so hoping you get news soon

hazeyjane · 13/05/2014 14:35

Just called the woman in charge of ds's request for sa, panel is sitting at the moment, she said she will hopefully get back to me later today, god I can't stand waiting any more, I wish they would just pull their bloody finger out.

Saw SALT yesterday and she was stunned it hadn't been sorted yet, she said with ds's difficulties it is really important that things get in place for September ASAP, but without the statement it is all a bit hypothetical.

She also told us she is leaving and won't be ds's SALT, which we is really upsetting, the last SALT ds had was bloody awful, and then we had a really long period with no one. This SALT was great, i can't believe we are going to have another change at such an important time.

Fishandjam · 13/05/2014 21:15

Oh hazey how frustrating for you. Especially with the change of SALT.

We met DS's SALT yesterday - even though he doesn't have any speech/language issues she is a sort of coordinator for all sorts of SEN things. We've started talking about a transition to school plan as well as an IEP and a personal care plan for his soiling problem (assuming that's not fixed by September). Feels good that we have a rough idea of what to do next.

Skimmingstones · 27/05/2014 15:15

Quick Update. ds has his final statement and place at ss confirmed. I could not be more relieved

autumnsmum · 27/05/2014 15:36

Skimming that's marvellous news

OP posts:
Skimmingstones · 27/05/2014 17:36

Yes I'm ecstatic and just beyond relieved I don't know if I'd have got there without all the info on mnsn, I'm not a massive poster but have a read through most days and it's helped so much

hazeyjane · 27/05/2014 18:19

So pleased for you, Skimming.

We are waiting to hear back from central sen about the changes we have requested to the statement, the school seem to think ds should be on a whole other band of funding. Will have to check the timeline to see what date they are supposed to have got back to us by. I really hope we don't have a battle on our hands.

hazeyjane · 27/05/2014 18:20

Skimming, I would have been lost without this place, not just the advice but the support when things are not going to plan, or you are just having a wobble.

Skimmingstones · 27/05/2014 18:29

Thank you hazey. I really hope you don't have a fight and they come back in the time frame.

Thankfully I was happy with the provision in the statement. There were horrendous typos though that I didn't ask them to change as I just wanted it finished as I'd been told over and over that around June/July they are likely to run out of places at the ss.

All the typos were facts copied out the appendices and you could tell they were just that as the sentence clearly didn't make sense! So I just left it Blush

Skimmingstones · 27/05/2014 18:33

The knowledge and support available on here is not matched by any other place I've found. I would like to post more but have my own health problem and often just don't have the energy to keep up a conversation. Maybe when ds starts school I will!

autumnsmum · 27/05/2014 18:51

Skimming we all dip in and out I myself have no knowledge of sen law but I love the company on here
