A big boast and (hopefully) inspiration

Three years ago, Autism Outreach told me that because of my son's problems with emotional literacy he'd never manage more than a D for English Language. So much of the work is analytical, or creative, and he'd wouldn't be able to get it. She explained, "None of the autistic kids ever get more than a D for English" Sad.

We were already home educating by then, as ds had been failed by two schools and we'd given up on any support. I had no idea how to tackle his problems with English and emotions, and I'd tried plenty. Then I found an amazing tutor, a wonderful girl who was (still is!) studying English and Linguistics at university. She has worked steadily with ds for the last three years, and taught him so much. His use of language has developed into a mature writing style, and yes he's even learned how to analyse literature texts. He will even write (under duress!) about himself - something he's always found extremely difficult.

In January he sat IGCSE English exams and this morning he got his results. He has actually passed with an A*, something I'd never thought possible. I am enormously proud of what he's achieved and have wept buckets since the email came Smile.

So yes, I'm boasting, but I also hope this can inspire some of you to be open minded about your children's abilities and not be fobbed off by those professionals who have no ambition for them, and won't have the resources or intent to support them towards high achievement. Our children are amazing and full of promise, and with the right people behind them they can soar.

Also absolutely fantastic that the young tutor (and her other family members) achieved this too. It makes me hope that just maybe the next generation of young teachers/tutors might get it right regarding SEN (instead of this generation, who, apart from the rare inspirational teacher/tutor, still hasn't "got it").

That is awesome well done streakyteen
and well done streaky for standing by him and never giving up.Grin

Shame on the people who had given up on him Sad

Thank you all Grin

I'm now thinking about who would be best on the SEN team to inform about this.

My LA is a Pathfinder for the new EHC plan and I think someone senior within that team might be worth contacting. It wouldn't hurt to remind them that the proposed changes to SEN sprang from a Green Paper called 'Support and Aspiration'. Indeed Hmm.

Well done to your son, your family and the tutors. You did well!

The aspirations society has from SN kids needs to go up. Send your story to daily mail and what not.

My daughter is just 4 and no life skills at all. Non vwrbal and no languge. I am jumping up and down reading your post, imagine, how parents across the country will be thrilled and motivated when they read it.

Ineedmorepatience · 08/03/2014 09:20

I would be telling all the teams streaky It might give them all a reminder not to write children with SN's off!!!

Many, many congratulations to mini streaky and to streaky. I really thought finally getting a diagnosis of ASD would lead to more understanding and support but am finding that it just seems to give some professionals an excuse for low expectations.

HugAndRoll · 09/03/2014 20:57

Wow that's fantastic Thanks.
