How long does it take to know outcome of ASD assessment

Are you told the diagnosis on the day of the assessment?

We were. Assessment, including talking to dd, talking to us, and then speaking amongst themselves, doing certain tasks with dd and watching her on the playground at breaktime took a whole morning (9-12). They then called us back into the room and told us the diagnosis and how they came to the conclusion. We got the written report around 3 weeks later.

Usually or in most cases, you get the diagnosis on the day.

I got diagnosis 2 weeks later.

I had to wait - also dh was in the armed forces and was away so had to wait until he came back as they insisted on telling us together - that said elder son we were told there and then so I guess it can just depend who is doing the assessment and what type of assessments they are doing

We were told informally on the day of the assessment but the official feedback meeting was a week later.

I waited weeks. The CAMHS team had had their panel meeting and drawn their conclusions, but said it was 'too complicated' to discuss over the phone. By the time they could get everyone together (four people, including us) it was about six weeks.

We had to go for second opinion assessment as the CAMHS one was inconclusive. Ds was assessed in a developmental disorders clinic over the course of a single day and we got the dx at the end of it.

I think it depends a lot on who conducts the assessment and what their process is. There shouldn't be any excuse to wait too long though.

My DS had a multidisciplinary assessment. He had 64 hours of assessment over 4 weeks at the children's assessment unit of our local hospital. It was like a small nursery where about 4 children attended all at once. He was assessed by specialist nursery nurses, OT (occupational therapist), PT (physiotherapist), SALT (speech and language therapist) and CP (clinical psychologist). As they have the advantage of having the children in for 4 weeks they use the direct observations of staff over the period of the assessment rather than the individual session used for an ADOS test. They also carried out an observation at home and at nursery so they could get the views of his usual nursery staff. At the end of the assessment period I had to take part in a parent interview called an ADI-R. I then got the diagnosis in writing about a week after that.

Clinical psychologist said definitely yes at the end of first meeting, then did the assessment (ADOS, GADS etc) over 5-6 meetings a couple of months later, then a break of a month for him to write the report and us to see it, then another 2-3 weeks for him to write it up still keeping in the spelling mistakes and send it to us. It was a long 6 months of knowing but not having proof. Even after the confirmation at the end of each test session, I still left the last session asking again was he sure? Really?
