Carer's Allowance, woo hoo!

A couple of weeks ago I filled in an on-line form to find out if I can get the above. Got a letter today saying I'll get £43.15 A WEEK! I know lots of you already get this but I'm just so pleased!! I Googled Carer's Allowance, got straight to the right place and the form was really easy to complete. The only tricky info was NI number for me and hubby but I vaguely remember that they found these out from our names and dates of birth. I don't think I qualified before as I was working and then on maternity leave. Now I've found out that you can get a tax allowance by putting something in your tax return about caring for a child with a disability, that's next on the list!

Go on Davros! Well done, and well deserved. Very happy for you.

fio2 · 11/03/2004 17:37

well done Davros SmileSmile It is easy to get because you have done all the donkey work with the DLA. Its not bad though is it on top of the dla. Only problem is if you start working again you are either limited or lose it altogether. But brilliant anyway, I am just rambling Grin

Davros you know the tax thing could my dh claim that then or not? because I am the main carer? if that makes any sense whatsoever

Davros · 11/03/2004 17:54

Don't know fio2, will look into it and report back. My next mission, if I choose to accept it......

Grin oh please accept please Grin

I had never heard of this though honest. Stupid husband is still paying higher tax than he should be though and is too lazy to sort it out so it will take him years if he is entitled to it!

coppertop · 11/03/2004 18:31

Well done Davros! And of course you'll be spending it wisely.....

luckymum · 11/03/2004 19:31

Well done Davros......still waiting here for DLA

lou33 · 11/03/2004 20:00

Yay Davros!

I've just sent ds2's DLA application off for mobility. Why on earth do they make you fill out the entire form again?! He's been signed onto highest rate care indefinitely, so I find it really annoying. AND they said it's 12 weeks before we hear! What a waste of time and paper and energy (imo).

Just got to finish dd1's now, grrr...

Kayleigh · 11/03/2004 20:07

Well done Davros. Really pleased for you

dottee · 11/03/2004 22:28

Tip for all DLA form fillers - keep a photocopy. They review every few years whether you like it or not.

dottee · 11/03/2004 22:31

p.s. well done Davros!

p.p.s. Glad to know someone is in the Carers' Allowance office - I sent some p/t wage slips in the week before Christmass for my review and I haven't heard a thing since.

Davros · 11/03/2004 22:34

Coppertop, I will be spending it wisely, I fancy a £40 bottle of wine! (not really). Just thinking about this, I assume that whoever gets Carer's Allowance is unlikely to be paying much, if any tax or we wouldn't get it would we? Therefore this tax allowance probably can't go to that person unless they give us money back? I paid 88p tax on my recent return and was rubbing my hands, thinking they're going to owe me money but how can this work? Conundrum..... will try to find out tomorrow but it is the baby's first birthday so may be busy making faces and taking pix

Or less than a year in this case Dottee!

RexandBen · 11/03/2004 23:36

Happy Birthday to the baby!!!!!

And CONGRATULATIONS on the CA!!!!

fio2 · 12/03/2004 06:44

happy birthday to your little girl Davros Smile

Davros · 12/03/2004 09:06

Thanks for the birthday wishes, I've got to assemble a (sodding) little rocking chair during her nap!!!
Just had a look at the Inland Revenue website where you can apply for tax credits on line and, if you're part of a couple, you apply as a unit. However, I can't see a section for looking after a DISABLED child, just looking after (a) child(ren) and a section for if YOU are disabled. I suppose the way to do it is apply on line and see what happens. Look here It looks like you have to fill in your income for last year or how much tax you paid, rather than them getting the info via your NI number, but I didn't go too far into it so may be wrong and it might be easier to fill in than I think. I'm going to dig out the last tax returns as they're still lying around and have a go at it this weekend.

later on in the tax credit forms it asks if your kids and disabled and if they get high rate care.

Davros · 12/03/2004 09:22

Thanks Misdee, its worth ploughing through then.

DAVROS....in our case the extra tax allowance for ds1 ammounts to about £150 a month!!! He is low mobility/middle care DLA and we are fairly low income....just too high to get income support etc..... so this tax allowance may be different if you have a 'higher' family income...but when we geot it awarded it came as a total shock as it appears that 'somehow' the 'system' became aware of the fact we had a disabled child....as i had not told them! One day out of the blue we got a payment of almost £800 !!!!! That's how i 'discovered' it! The tax office explained that this was the 'byproduct' of how they calculate it over 52 wks and then they send a minimum of 1 month at the time it is set up.....so all i can say is go for it.......i am on incapacity benefit- so i don't get the CA at the moment- however if i did and i add the CA ,DLA and extra Tax Credits together it almost covers what i earnt in my last job- so i truely feel that 'the system' is helping me care properly for my son- when i worked he had to be farmed off to various people till my husband finished work- he found this very stressful due to his ASD- so though i'm sure the money paid is not designed to 'replace a wage' - in my case it hsa made that possible. Now....as you know ds2 is likely to be dx'd too- and i feel 'guilty' that we could even recieve money for him too- however when i am next in town with him and he runs right through a crowded pavement- sending pedestrians in every direction ....some on the road....then i will remember how his difficulties affect many more people around us....not just us! (same when he lies down in front of people trying to shop)

Congrats Davros! I get it too but seem to find it hard to spend money on myself...

And Happy Birthday Yesterday to Little Davros
