Carers allowance - quick question

bluebirdonmyshoulder · 26/01/2014 15:44

Just doing my tax return due to the bloody child benefit changes - it asks if you're in receipt of any benefits but when I ticked yes, Carers' Allowance is not an option.

So is it a benefit and is it taxable?

Thank you

It's taxable, yes. We don't do tax returns, but on the tax credit forms, it goes under other income.

zebrafinch · 26/01/2014 15:48

It is taxable for income tax if you are above the personal threshold from other sources of income

zebrafinch · 26/01/2014 15:53

And Carers allowance is a taxable state benefit

CorporalChugNutting · 26/01/2014 15:58

Stupid question alert but if you are over the threshold for tax wouldn't you be ineligible for carers as you earn too much? I thought you could only earn about 100 pounds per week which wouldn't be enough to be taxed on.

bluebirdonmyshoulder · 26/01/2014 17:09

Thanks all. Wonder why it's not an option on the form then. Will have to ring HMRC.

Corporal as I explained in my OP, we have to do a tax return due to the child benefit changes. I don't earn anything but that doesn't mean you don't have to do a tax return.

You seem to be implying I'm claiming fraudulently. Please don't.

You may have other taxable income, for example income from rental property, income from dividends etc. It could be that you might in a tax year come off Carers Allowance take a fixed term temporary paid employment or do self employment earning above the personal threshold and then in the same tax year go back onto Carers Allowance. Or the first year you move from paid employment to claiming Carers Allowance could put you in the position where Carers Allowance is taxable. It's another reason why this benefit is not fit for purpose, caring for 35 hours a week and getting taxed on the benefit is another slap in the face

zebrafinch · 26/01/2014 17:15

My previous post was just to give examples of where Carers Allowance may be taxable for some people

CorporalChugNutting · 26/01/2014 17:18

I'm really sorry- I didn't mean that at all. I'm sorry if I caused offence.

CorporalChugNutting · 26/01/2014 17:18

Thank you for the explanation zebra

Zebra, I know that if you have other income you may not be eligible.

My main source of confusion is why it' not listed as an option on the self assessment form!!

CA and child benefit is my only income.

I have not accessed the current SA tax form yet (hope to do it tomorrow ) but in previous years versions there is a section
Other income not included on supplementary pages
And under this
Total of other taxable state pensions and benefits.
I have in previous forms put my Carers allowance in here .
I have also put in the notes at the end of the whole form that I have put the CA in this section.
In previous versions it is also not listed under UK pensions , annuities and other state benefits received whilst other state benefits are .

Thanks. That's what I'll do if I can't get an answer from HMRC. Unless you and I are the only people who've left it to the last week!

Corporal with hindsight I was too sensitive! Sorry!
