Who pays for a laptop for school?

Ds is 14 and has a social skills delay and hypermobility syndrome, which affects his hands and feet the most. He finds writing painful as his fingers bend backwards when he holds a pen so he's in pain after a few minutes. We've tried pens that are thick, have put foam around them to make them softer, tried gel pens, ergonomic pens etc and it makes no difference as his fingers bend back at the joints and there's not a great deal of support ligament wise in his hands and feet so they appear flatter then they should be (if this makes sense). He's been assessed by the OT at the hospital and she's going to recommend to the school that he avoids writing due to the pain and the damage it will do to his hands (she's given him some exercises and practical advice too).

Ds is at a private school and I've no idea whether I have to pay for the laptop. I'm assuming I can't go to PC world and pick one up as it will need insurance, an extra battery and packages etc. The OT didn't know who pays for it either (odd!). I just need to be prepared for the impending bill so I can sell a kidney on ebay or something as I don't expect it to be cheap.

Thank you Thanks

Unless you are very fortunate with your LA then it will be you or the school. ds is supplied with one to use in classroom and one with suitable restrictions (ie no spell check) for exam conditions by the school. He has his own at home.

Hmm, I doubt the LEA will help, they can't even sort out the bus pass for him as we live in the shire and he goes to school in the city. This is beyond their ability, apparently Hmm

A separate one at home and school would help, anything that means he doesn't need to write really.

Thank you Smile
