Can a SA SALT assessment be carried out without the child being spoken to?

My ds, aged 8, diagnosis AS, Dyspraxia and SPD, is due to have his SALT assessment on Monday. This was requested by the LA as part of the SA process. I understand the assessment is to comprise of a brief observation in class (where I guess he may or may not choose to speak) followed by a meeting with the SENCO. The SALT is not proposing to meet with or speak to my ds at all as previous meetings with medical professionals have caused my ds a great deal of anxiety. My question, however, is can a SALT assessment be properly carried out without speaking to the child? Does anyone have any experience of this? Thank you in advance!

Would have thought they could see little bit about him by just watching but , would have thought to get a true picture of his abilities they would have had to do some sort of interaction .
Could you not be present to calm his nerves at back of the room whilst they do the tests with him . You just need to try be a quiet as possible , so he knows your there but doesn't expect you to help him . Usually when they start getting things wrong on a continuous basis they then call halt to that test.
Hope this helps a little why don't you ask them , as he's being assessed you have a right to copy of information . You could suggest to them that you don't think that just observing him is going to give a true representation of what his capabilities are.
But I ask them why . You can also ask to be present in school to speak with the therapist afterwards if you wish to do this . You must let them know however this is what you want to do.

Ds salt picked up quite a few things by watching his interactions in class, but she also assessed him on his own. I guess you need to ask.

Ds refused to take part in assessment with EP for SA purpose, although she did attempt assessment. Formal assessment was impossible. So LA did not even bother with any other assessments.

What SALT determines through observations, will be regarded as up to date SALT 'advice' and determine the provision in a statement.

EP wrote in her report the reason why she couldn't do an assessment and gave an account of ds's anxiety etc, in her report for SA.

Why isn't the SALT even attempting to assess? and on advice from who is she not even attempting assessment?

I would have thought it logical, if she knows that your ds gets anxious, that she would try her hardest not to raise anxiety, maybe taking a break during assessment for example and if there was an increase, she could stop.
