Invited to write the IEP on Wednesday - ASD diagnosis on Friday!!

Head is spinning a little. Despite the fact that my mother had a stroke on Tuesday evening I had to attend a meeting following DS2s recent refusal to assess on Wednesday with the head/senco and LA rep.

Using techniques that Machiavelli would be jealous of, I managed to get agreement for 10 hours ABA-lite token reward system, in class, to target pre-learning pre-requisites, with removal from class only for OT and SALT interventions.

This morning he had an appointment at the Neurology Clinic. Within minutes the consultant said she did not think he had ADHD but was on the autistic spectrum and that she had basically diagnosed him on the walk from the waiting area (didn't respond to hello or make eye contact etc). He is being referred for the ADOS but she said that he will be diagnosed regardless of the result.

I've never had a child in m/s with an ASD diagnosis and don't know what should be on the IEP. The paed said that the school should put in support such as outreach/specialist teacher now. What targets do I put on the IEP? At the moment they are 1:1 SALT for pronunciation and narrative delay, 1:1 OT programme, concentration and attention (5 mins on a good day for the past 2 years, no social desire to please, fantastic focus for self-chosen activities but zero engagement if not interested).

Given that the LA has forced the school to put in 13.5 hours, does the additional support for ASD mean that the school now need to apply for top-up funding (or given that we live across the border) to support the statement and insist that the home LA pays for OT, SALT and ASD support (including advice of behavioural specialist to implement in class TRS to modify behaviour)?

TIA

Forgot to say that I am appealing the refusal (of course).

DS1 has an ASD diagnosis but had already left m/s primary before he was diagnosed and is now in indi ss.

I have therefore never seen what ASD provision in the m/s looks like or what should be on the IEP.

Suggestions would be most appreciated Smile

SENCO really will let me write the IEP as the LA threw him to the wolves (me) - he now wants my sympathy because 'that woman from the LA was talking as if I don't recognise need...' Really? I wonder where she got that idea? Pre-tribunal the LA can be useful allies provided that you don't believe a word they say and carry on regardless.

Am watching with interest as Dd3 has never had a decent IEP !! She is due a review now because we have been waiting for the new SALT report to land before setting new targets.

Although I have to say at the moment I feel like it is the staff that needs targets not Dd3.

Their first one would be....

Consistently warn Dd3 of changes to the timetable as stated in her communication passport!!

The criteria for success would be Dd3 not having meltdowns after school due to her not being aware of impending/sudden changes to her timetable!!

Good luck Smile

Oh and the strategies would be
" For all staff to read the damn communication passport and remember what it says "

Can you tell I am a little frustrated Hmm

Thanks - been preoccupied with my mum. Smile

Christ on a bike - this has not been a quiet week.

What would you want on the IEP if given free reign? As in stuff that actually works. Grin Bracket Salt and OT intervention for now (just need to actually follow advice for now) but what else?

Apologies for my shocking ignorance. Smile

Sorry keep meant to say hope your mum is ok.

And great news about the switched on Paed and the support at school Smile

Ineed - ds2 has had termly visits etc from salt and OT but the real problem is that they can only advise (would benefit from...) and the school ignore. Make direct contact with NHS specialists and specialist teachers. They get pissed off when they make assessment and give advice and even train TAs only to be ignored.

They can force the school to add IEP targets but won't left to their own devices.

I also drafted a complaint to the BOG and a disability discrimination claim and copied the drafts, with the written evidence spanning 2 years, to LA reps whose immediate aim is refusal, just before the meeting. Might as well have some fun.

I must say that there is the potential and that there is no negative effect. I am done with being bend-over-backwards reasonableness. It's actually quite amusing if you bracket the emotion. Simple questions like 'why?' plus 'if you want to say that just say it and I will write it down' which is immediately followed by 'I am not saying it is meaningless/there is adequate progress'.

Every little helps Smile

Yes we have had that with outside agencies going in and making recommendations but nothing at all changing.

I have someone coming with me to the next [only] IEP review so hopefully things might be taken a little more seriously.

I am also fed up of being nice and overly reasonable Hmm
