SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

It sounds trivial, but can I just rant quietly?

DD2 has got in the habit of spelling words, but only using the first 2 or 3 letters, so I have to, somehow, magically, work out the word, the context, the random conversation from 2 or 3 hours earlier that it relates to, etc.

A case in point: DD3 was playing tug with our puppy/dog, Patch. He's (just) 2. She was playing tug with the rope.

DD2 decided that to give DD3 a chance to grab the rope, she should kick the dog, repeatedly. Unsurprisingly, he bit her. Entirely accidentally, I suspect, because she had no injury, bar a tiny flake of loose skin on her little finger (no redness, scratches, blood or any other sign of injury). When I asked what happened, she admitted that she'd kicked him at least twice, with shoes on.

She felt that the dog should apologise. I pointed out that she had started kicking him, so if anything she should apologise. She said that he should apologise first. We left it there.

Now, 2 hours laters, she's come to me and said 'Mum. I apologised to P-A-T....'

Righto.

Sometimes it's so obscure though. She says 'Mum are we going to....H-O-M??

Errr.... Turns out she means 'reading homework'

Yesterday, she said 'Mum can I have some...' and tapped her foot three times on the ground. Apparently, I was meant to work out that she was tapping the syllables of 'orange cake'.

And, and, and, she whistles me. Like a dog. Hmm

I'm possibly not coping with her because I'm in post-migraine fog. But seriously...a woman has limits!!

Last night dd2 was reading a book on Gandhi. She got tired of pronouncing the long Indian words like Satyagraha, so we started substituting for silly English words.

One of the characters in the book was named Shukla.

dd2 nicknamed him 'Pain-au-Shukla'

This is so interesting. My DS does the aspidistra thing too oyuvre and the made up words thing myfabulous. Forgive my ignorance as I am quite new to the SN board but do most of the children on this thread have AS diagnoses? Just interested as my son has something different but related and the more I find out about AS and ADHD the more features he seems to share. Thinking along the lines that finding out a bit more about both conditions will help me help him more.

The made up words thing drives me nuts. We often get mummy I want the bleUSTABLE bammedum which turns out to be a cheese sandwich or something else which sounds completely different!

I guess there is a surprising amount of overlap in some areas with children with quite different diagnoses then. Not surprising really given how complicated it is to work out what is going on with our DC's.

My DS does the spelling thing too (although his spelling isn't great so generally incorrectly) - iirc he is the same age as lougle's dd2. He also likes to give clues and make me guess stuff, e.g. what he wants to eat; and make me guess passwords before I'm "allowed" to do stuff e.g. come in to his room or make a request of him. It can be really bloody infuriating!

Ahh. Ds isn't up to spelling but we get the odd bits of fragmented out of context mispronounced speech, requiring considerable mind reading skills to disentangle! Usually when I am busy. Also the thumbs up as if summoning a waiter ( don't think ds can whistle). If I get it wrong a melt down is next.

lougle · 09/01/2014 21:29

DD2 doesn't have a diagnosis, right now. She's definitely not one from the cookie-press though Wink

My Ds often spells words out to me instead of speaking them ..and claps his hands to the syllables rather than saying the sentence or words.

Also get air writing and passwords. dx=hfa
I too didn't see it as odd as just the way he is but it is most definately annoying at times. No not going with it though, would then have to start again, get shouted at, meltdown.i would rather spend 10 mins working out the word!
