Ds obsessed with red top

Ds who is 5 has recently developed an obsession for wearing a red top everyday and given the chance would sleep in the same red top. He reluctantly agrees to change out of this red top when we leave the house but as soon as we get home he goes straight upstairs and changes into his jeans and this red top again...if it's in the wash he finds another red top to wear. Does anyone know what this means and if your child's does the same??

It could be that it is something that he can control, little children dont have much control over their lives so sometimes try to take a little bit.

I would go with it, it sounds like he is able to compromise when its time to go out and when it needs washing.

Oh ok so it's not necessarily connected to his sensory processing disorder? (sorry I should have mentioned he has SPD and also been diagnosed with a language disorder... No diagnosis for ASD but on occasions like this with the red top obsession it does make me wonder!)

Hi

My dd (3.7, very likely asd) has a similar total obsession with 2 dresses she had from last summer with butterflies on them (very obsessed with butterflies in general). She loved wearing them in the summer and by the time we got into autumn was insisting on wearing one or the other every day (tricky when they were thin cotton and weather was getting colder!). I was prepared to go so far as long as we could squeeze adequate layers underneath, (and as long as they were still clean!) but began to put my foot down in the really chilly weather. Our compromise was that she now wears them in bed at night, over her pyjamas, and once we'd started doing this, she gave up on them in the day. But woe betide us all if there isn't a clean dry butterfly dress available at bedtime...
