It is for the DDD study, I can't for the life of me work out how I am going to get him to spit/dribble into the tube!

I've stopped his hyoscine in the hope it brings on a tidal wave of drool!

Any ideas?

He has had to do a wad sucking test before (that sentence looks very weird!) for mosaic Down's syndrome, it didn't go well and our lovely genetics nurse left very traumatised with a sample that was completely useless. Sitting next to a piece of banana sends him over the edge, so sticking wadding in his mouth was, mmmm, interesting!

He is clearly having a non drooly day today, so may wait for a dribblier day and follow him round.

I will try the blowing things - he is pretty bad at blowing and there is usually a lot of spit flying around when he tries!

Thanks zzzzzSmile

No experience but how about playing 'pretending to brush teeth' with a dry toothbrush and then seeing if the brushing helps produce saliva and if he is able getting him to spit??

Geneticsreindeer · 04/01/2014 22:47

Doesn't need to be sterile if it is for genetic testing. Recorder might just work... Grin

Could you make a game he would join in with? Both spitting and maybe a new medicine syringe to suck his up off the clean surface? Spit onto pictures maybe? Just hope not to start a bad habit lol

Geneticsreindeer · 05/01/2014 15:07

Sorry zzzzzzz. I can only assume that the person who spoke to you didn't realise. Spit isn't sterile anyway so seems a bit weird. Am I right in thinking that the sample was for array analysis for the DDD study and not some unusual diagnostic test?

sparklesandbling · 05/01/2014 20:59

For the DDD test our DD just had to chew on the sponge on end of a large cue tip that then got inserted and twisted into tube so all spit was in tube.

Maybe go back and ask them if they can help u with this?

sparklesandbling · 05/01/2014 21:01

I mean with the tube thing, as our DD would not voluntarily spit on command so we emphasised this to the geneticist and we were sent this item

I will ask the genetics nurse, sparkles, but tbh he was awful with the spongey thing on a stick thing when he had the mosaic downs test.

Since stopping the hyoscine, the drool has been building up, so I will try tomorrow.

Wish me luck!
