Hi, My youngest ds (just turned 3) had a v slight speech delay so we see a private speech therapist. Developmentally everything is fine.

However, today at his nursery , they noticed that his tongue rolls sideways when he tries to pronouce sounds that you would use the middle and back of your mouth for - like Taa sounds.
Its become more obvious to all of us now he does it because he's desperate to share a story etc and i'm wondering what this could be?

I've sent an email to his speech therapist to check at his next appointment and made a general GP appointment to check his tongue for tongue tie and/or refer us to an ENT or some sort of mouth tongue specialist (does one exist?).

I just wanted to ask other mums if they knew what it could be and their experiences.

With ds at 3/4, he had similar problems. Slight speech delay and he couldn't produce certain sounds or blends, 'car' was 'tar' and 'red' was 'wed', the 'm' sound was produced as a 'h' and 'g' was 'd' sound for example. It made it very difficult to understand what ds was saying.

Ds's tongue was all over the place, simply due to the effort of trying to produce these sounds.

It sounds a very sensible idea for SALT/GP to check.
