Growth spurt causing problems!

Ds has learning disabilities and his understanding is poor so I can't give him instructions or ask him not to do certain behaviour. He has just had a growth spurt and he can now reach the kettle, fruit bowl, toaster, light switches, taps with out a stool to stand on, take things out the fridge etc... And it's causing chaos! No matter how far back I push things he can still reach them and we have limited space so there's no way of putting things away, I guess this isnt an issue for most children when they reach this height (and they're probably not obsessed with switches either)

Anybody else been through this and got any tips?

A lock on the kitchen door would be a quick and easy solution, or a large stair gate/stable type door.

I really feel for you it must be very difficult.

Good luck Smile

Thank you, we do have a stair gate on the kitchen but sometimes it's not practical to keep it closed (or I forget) and there are hazards around the whole house. Picture frames are being wiped off our mantelpiece which is not only destroying them but I'm worried the glass will smash and cause him harm. I really don't want to but things like that away as they're what make our home Sad

Maybe you could get a few pictures printed onto canvas, I know its not the answer but it would be safer.

Also had a thought about symbols, I dont know how your Ds communicates but if you actually stuck some "No touching" symbols on to dangerous objects or areas it might help to remind him.

We love visuals in my house and have various visual reminders dotted around.

Sorry posted too soon. We do have a few symbols like no taps, no Christmas tree etc and they were great to start with but they are starting to loose their effect. He tends to just want to play with the symbol now. I'm hoping it's another phase and the novelty will wear off. I can hope!
