DS's schools entire Learning support team being axed!

i heard yesterday that the entire learning support team at my ds's school is being made reduntant at the end of term (tuesday)
i have been panicing like mad and trying tot find out if this was true since then...have just spoken to another mum who has confirmed it as she had spokent to the Senco on friday who told her.

Ds goes to a MS school but it has the highest number of statemented children in the borough. i cannot believe that A) they can remove the Sn support frm the school. aparantly the deputy yhead will become the inclusions officer...in my mind that is a completly different thing to a SENCO....his understanding of Ds's needs are, if im polite, lacking.
but also why on earth have i had to find out from my little brother ( he goes to the school)

i feel so let down. i am at that school 4 times a day and am normally having conversations with the head, deputy an senco at least once a week. I think that considering my son has by far the most need for support within the school i shold have been told abut this.

i am so angry and quite upset.
there is a huge chance that we will be facing a permenant expulsion for ds soon and tbh i am thinking that a SN school would be better for him(i am currently being told there are no sn schools suitable) but i cannot see how this new system can help if that is the decision we come to.

sorry im rambling. im just so angry.
do you think i have any chance of appealing or if there is anything i can do?
the nearest school for SN to me is for SLD and im told that it would be unsuitable for ds. (SAL disorder-word finding, fine and gross motor delay and severe behavioural issues which we believ to be ASD but have no firm dx as yet)
what do you think? i havent been to the school as yet but it gets rave reviews in local press.

is it worth me asking for him to be considered there? as i really cant see him getting anywhere in MS.

I think you need to talk to the head first thing on Monday and confirm what is actually happening, hon, before you do anything else. There is a possibility that you haven't heard the full story here and even if you have you need to hear it from the horse's mouth. If the entire learning support team is being made redundant how is it proposed that the (legal) obligation to support statemented children will be met? Whose decision is this? The school's or the LEA's? If the latter phone the LEA and talk to them too.

Re: Special school- ring them and ask if you can visit asap and talk to them about ds and his needs.

that sounds a bit drastic why have they done this, given the high number of kids with a statement how are they gonna meet their needs, am i right in thinking you live near me? nottingham? i know all the SN schools, maybe i can help in some way.

Oj - no i live in Crawley.
Apparantly the deputy head will take over as ab inclusions officer and therefore he will now be in charge of statements and sn.

as far as i can make out the decision has come from the LEA but im not sure.
i was worried about how he would manage next year anyway (he is going from reception to year 1 so quite a step) as it will be far more structured and will involve a lot more sitting and concentration....skills he just doesn't have at the mo.
so now i am in serious doubt.

who makes the decision as to whether he can go to a sn school? can i just apply for the school myself or do i have to go through the lea and his current schhol?

I am going to speak to the head tomorrow when i drop ds off and will be having a bit of a go at her fornot even giving me the courtesy of informing me this was happening. i think that it is only fair that as a parent whose child relies heavily on this resource i should be informed of its apparant closure.

Does the SN team at the LEA work through the holidays? as i think im going to have to spend my time arguing with them for the next few weeks.

grr at moving to a whole new area..i have no idea about anything here, it all works so differently to London

does DS have a statement? i think some parts of the lea are open during the summer hols, of course the bits you want will of course be closed

fattiemumma · 24/07/2006 22:13

yeah he has had a statement since he was 3 so you would think all these things would be in place wouldn't you.

he is meant to be funded for 24.5 hours of support. but im otld he will not be getting a full 1:1 next year as the school thihnk it best for him to try and integrate him more.

yes that would be lovely,....until he has an explosion, hurts someone and gets expelled for a week! t5ried calling the parent partnership today but got nothingbut the answerphone all day.

please excuse me while i scream!

fattiemumma, hope that your fears turn out not to be true.
PP told me last week that our SN dept are open throughout the summer holidays as its their busiest time preparing statements to be ready for Sept so keep trying your SN dept and also our PP is open throughout the summer holidays too.

I realy hope you manage to get some answers on this one, its something that would have me stressed to the nines.

I don'tt hik legally the school can reduce the 1:1 hours as stated on his statement, and I'm not sure the LEA can withdraw the learning support insuch a way.

IPSEA should be of some use... if you can get through, they are very very busy people!
