Help with school shoes!!

Was out shopping today and popped into Clarks to get the childrens feet measured. Tried some little school shoes on Amelia but I really felt there weren't suitable for her. Up to now she has really worn little boots or trainers but all the designs seemed to offer her no support whatsoever!

She doesn't have to wear her AFOs anymore and although her knees are still slightly hyperflexed at times there has been a vast improvement. In general she is very unsteady on her feet.

Has anyone seen anything more suitable or got any advice. Thought it would be nice to get her first pair of little school shoes for September.

what about seeing if she can get peidros

Dingle · 22/07/2006 19:55

She had peidros before they eventually decided on the AFOs. She doesn't even see a physio now so the chances of her getting peidros again is very unlikely.

Al the lillte school shoes in clarks were like litte slip ons, very low cut with a velcro strap across. No support around the ankle at all.

Boy's shoes? (I know they don't look very 'girly', but they do tend to be solid and supportive and relatively high on the foot - some styles are more unisex than others).
Have you looked at the Clark's catalogue? Our local store often has a very limited selection.
Also, Startrite do seem to do quite different styling, so might be worth looking there.
Right now a lot of shoe shops are running out of summer stock (so you cannot get summer sandals!) but haven't yet got a range of winter stock in. There could be a better selection in late Aug.

Arrr....like these
and only half of what Clarks are charging. Look a bit more supportive at the back.

I got Clarkes shoes for the girls but they were not the flimsy ones with a bar cross

They had a wider velcro strap over and a fully enclosed shoe

I thought they were a better support for Ellie (last year though!)

what about something like this

I'd leave it until nearer September when they have their autumn range in stock. I bought a reasonably supportive pair last year (like anniebear) which were great as an alternative to DD's Piedros. Went in a while ago for some for the summer and there was very little with enough support (even for just the odd occasion when the Piedros come off).

If she is unstaedy on her feet, could you get referred back to the physio or orthotics dept and ask for Piedros? I think there are so many nice designs for girls for the autumn and winter - and I should know! My DS had a pair from the girls pages of the catalogue!

At least then you would know she was getting exactly the right kind of suport - and you'd get them free, too!
