Peace again

We have had a dreadful few weeks with ds1. Constant screaming, awful OCD. Pinching people, self harming. Dreadful.

I thought it might be because he hadn't had fish oils for 6 weeks. We started them again last week- and started cod liver oil for the vitamin A on Tuesday (see the thimeorsil thread for why), and suddenly this morning we have peace again. He's like a different child. Anxiety seems to have gone and he's completely chilled. No-one's been attacked today, and we've all had lots of cuddles.

Got my little boy back

That's great news.

It must be so good to have a bit of peace again.

eidsvold · 29/02/2004 15:32

so pleased for you Jimjams

Eulalia · 29/02/2004 16:17

Wonderful jimjams - I expect you know all this already but will post it anyway ... Autism: I can see clearly now

I wonder if this is why ds likes raw carrots so much

Jimjams · 29/02/2004 16:32

robinw pointed me in that direction this morning eulalia. DS1 started cod liver oil for the vitamin A earlier in the week. I think his nutritionist must have been to the conference mentioned in the report, as he mentioned something about a presentation.

So far he's just become scared of the dark (maybe he can see something for the first time!)

Awwww Jimjams - so so pleased for you

Oh, what brilliant news! I was wondering how the fish oils were going, especially when I read the article in the paper that Eulalia linked to. A great experiment, even if it's one you wish you'd never done. Long may it continue

Phew! I was wondering about this over the w/e and wondering how long any effect would take to kick in. Excellent news, must be a BIG relief. Order the next batch NOW!

great news Jimjams!
our ds1 loves carrots too - we have a Sunday ritual when we all have tea together - roast chicken - and we have to eat by candle light with all the other lights in the house off. One day he had to venture into the dark kitchen to get a spoon, but solemnly finished all his carrots first

Feel I have to update this. We had exellent feedback all week from school. Then yesterday ds1 had SALT (priavte) for the first time in 2 weeks. His SALT was really stunned by the difference. She said he was using eye contact to engage her rather than just staring blankly. She said he worked hard and concentration was good as well. In fact she went to a friend's afterwards and told her to get the same stuff for her daughter. We were pleased about the eye contact becase although I thought he was using eye contact more I wasn't sure- his eye contact with us tends to be quite good anyway so it was hard to tell.

DS1 has started to stare intently at lights. He's been staring at his hands as well (the way a baby does). He's also been walking up to leaves in the garden and studying them closely (the eway he does when wearing his red lenses) I'm sure the vitamin A is having some big effect on his vision.

Will keep you posted.

that is soo brilliant Jimjams

Excellent news Jimjams. Do you mind me asking, do you give him EyeQ and cod liver oil? How do you give him both or either? We tried fish oils some years ago (Efalex,no EyeQ then) but saw no difference.
It seems to me that a lot of biomedical-based interventions are more effective with "regressors". I'd be interested in what others think, I haven't thought this through properly, it just generally seems to be the case.

Jimjams · 07/03/2004 22:44

Absolutely more effective with "regressors". That's exactly what I've thought as well (and the MMR damaged children seem to do particularly well with biomed intervention). Maybe they regress because of bgut damage etc- the gut damage comes afer an environemental insults??? Who knows- but I have noticed the same thing.

We've been giving Pro-Efa (nordic naturals) for 18 months- 2 years. The cod liver oil was added a couple fo weeks ago., I've carried on giving the pro efa most days because I reckon he's down in oils at the moment after his 6 weeks without them. I only make sure that he gets the cold liver oil though, the proefa goes into him if I remember (has to be hidden on toast as well- cooled- so he has to be eating that).

Just to add- school have said twice this week that ds1 is a "pleasure". I think they werre quite suspicious of the whole fish oil thing when I mentioned that I thought that was why he was being horrendous a couple of weeks ag. They are now converted

Also last night was his first night in pants. He appears to have become dry at night over the last 10 days...... (which is good as he was in my bed )
