Paracetamol suppositories - anyone get them prescribed?

Just had a hellish night with ds ( 6 ASD and severe learning difficulties) he was burning up and every attempt to get medicine into him failed. Thinking of asking gp to prescribe some for him and wanted to know if anyone has had problems getting them from gp.

Yes, we have had them in the past from hospital pharmacy and from GP. Local pharmacy had to order them. My daughter would refuse all medication and I found them really useful.

We get them too, from the GP, as ds1 will
only take orange nurofen liquid without going berserk. DH and I cannot get a drop of anything else into him and we have tried everything.

We do get grumbling re how expensive they are but we have only asked for 3 packs in 6 years so I don't lose sleep over it! Luckily nurofen can deal with most problems but occasionally (eg severe ear pain) he really needs both forms of painkiller.

Our local chemist always has them in stock which has been handy

Yes we had them too for both Dd2 and 3, serial medication refusers.

Dd2 was first prescribed them in A and E and then we got them off the GP.

Again we got a lecture about how expensive they are but I just said I would take the to A and E if they had a high temp and they would give them anyway.

Dd3 finally managed to take sachets of calpol when she was about 6 so we keep them in stock and give her one every now and then just to keep her hand in Wink

Go for it they are lifesavers Smile

seems odd they are expensive, they are standard fare in the phamacists here in norway (thank heavens!) my nearly 8 year old will now swallow a coated tablet but calpol or the likes, no way. And she's NT.

I used to buy them online/aboad as the pharmacists here wouldn't sell them when I said it's for a child.

I have done in the past. Not for a good while now as son in question is now a teen and better at taking tablets.

We get them for my daughter. Not due to medicine refusal but because whenever she gets a fever she vomits so the paracetamol comes up too. I use the suppositories to bring her fever under control and then can dose by mouth after that. It wasn't a problem getting them from the GP.

We buy them in France (quite normal route there Grin Don't know why this country is so up the bum about them (sorry!!)

APMom · 01/12/2013 18:23

Can you not buy them over the counter. I can get them here in Ireland but they're fairly expensive around 10euro I think for a small pack but I would always have them in the house. My ds with autism will accept these rather than swallow medicine but I've used tgem on all my children until they refused. I also stock up on tgem when I'm in France, much cheaper there.
