Medication for OCD/AS tween?

Hello,

I don't know what I'm looking for - opinions or reassurance all welcome! DS is 12 and has bad OCD/anxiety along with Aspergers. New psychiatrist wants to try medication (anti-depressants) along with CBT and it looks like they want to start both at our appointment on Monday.

We have tried CBT before and it didn't help, but I'm anxious about starting him on medication. I don't know why - I'm on it myself and its the best decision I ever made! But I am an adult and he's still growing......

Anyone with any experience?

Thanks

Thanks for replying. Good to hear that it works. I think for the first time we're feeling that its affecting his life so much we just have to go for it.

Hi HipHop.
I have a Ds now 17 with OCD and AS. He has been taking antidepressants for the OCD since he was 10. Although it hasn't eliminated the OCD it has stabilised things and made it possible for him to improve greatly.
Like you I was very hesitant about starting medication but things were so bad it was worth a try.
He has never had any unwanted side effects and although it seems possible that he will now be taking them for life at least it will be a life with some quality to it.

Thank you for your reply. The quality of life comment really hit home - that's what I want for DS. Thank you, I am feeling much better about at least trying the medication now.

Urgh I was doing SO well and feeling so much better about giving her the mess....and then....went to the pharmacy this morning to fill the prescription and the pharmacist look at it and said "she's ELEVEN? They are prescribing sertraline for an ELEVEN year old???". Then made a big thing of checking with another pharmacist and shaking his head when he gave it to me :( :( :(

Really wobbling again now :(

that was really out of order of them. it is unusual, but that doesn't make it wrong.

Pharmacist do tend to check when a prescription is unusual but the way these two went about it was very wrong.

We try to always use the same pharmacy and they quickly got used to Ds's prescription.

You know you are doing the right thing to try it for your dd and the prescribing doctor obviously knows your dd's needs much better than the pharmacist.
