How is dyspraxia assessed ?

Can anyone please tell me how the process of possible dyspraxia is assessed ? We have gp referral to paediatrician. What kind of tests do they do? Will the assessments have any affect/hinder on Ds being due for further assessment early next year with the Communications Disorder Team incl ADOS.
I am still trying to get my head round understanding his private ASD (high functioning) dx , the possibility of dyspraxia aswell is daunting. Does it take as long as the ASD assessment process? Thank you

Has he been seen by an OT?

DS1 was diagnosed by an OT that I paid for him to actually see re sensory issues. She also identified he has hypermobility.

paed will probably refer to OT.
A private OT will give a dx of dyspraxia, but NHS OT will probably assess and then refer back to paed to make the dx IME.
Can take a while depending on waiting list in your area.

There is a huge crossover between Asd, dyspraxia and hypermobility. Dd3 has been seen by OT's, she doesnt quite meet the criteria for dypraxia but they are trying to unpick which of her issues are caused by her hypermobility and which by her Asd and sensory issues.

It really is very complex, OT's are your best bet.

Good luck Smile

Thanks. I'm interested in seeing this paed we have been referred to as he is very very good and I saw him before when Ds was a baby. However he will not dx anything. He said he will thoroughly assess. Prob as suggested above he will refer to OT then. As with ASD is it better to get nhs dx if there is one rather than private.

For us it was ot who wrote a report. The pead did the dx

Ok thanks. I'm going to pay private to see paed, same guy , just quicker, can't wait a year to find out if Ds also has dyspraxia.

I think if you get a detailed private report you should be able to take it to the nhs to get added to your notes.

Good luck

Thanks. Paed is also nhs and really well known in our area so all should be ok. I will check it with him at consultation. Just one thing after another isn't it..can't see it ever ending! Still got the dreaded statement to apply for yet. I think all this will be a walk in park compared to that.
