Carer's Allowance?

I'm getting Higher Rate Care and Lower Mobility for DS and I can't work, though DH does. Someone told me I may be able to claim carer's allowance?

Does anyone here claim carer's allowance? Should I bother applying? By the looks of the government website I meet the criteria, but not sure if it applies to looking after a child?

Thanks!

Yes you'll definitely get it if you don't work and DS has Higher rate care - I'm in the same situation. DH working makes no difference - it's based on your income and caring responsibilities. I'd say go for it! Like DLA it can also open the door to additional benefits (depending on circumstances). But in your situation I would definitely apply.
HTH :)

Yes, go for it, the form is fairly short and I got the decision within a week. If you get tax credits it does count as income.

sounds as if you qualify (it is not depended on household income but on your sole earnings which must not exceed £100/week).

You can also apply online here

yes, if you get tax credits you need to let the tax credit people know. it counts as an income but the gains from CA are higher than the TC losses so worth it.

Yes I am in the same situation as you and definitely think you should apply and receive carers. It was very quick and easy it took about 1 week, make sure you tell tax credits though.
Good luck

Thanks! Filling in the form now online. When should I claim from? Only had DLA since July, but obviously I have been caring for him his whole life!

I got it backdated. my DLA claim took 7 months (reconsideration and appeal). but I applied for CA as soon as the award came in.

maybe give them a ring? I found the helpline always helpful.

Another yes and you can backdate the claim up ti 3 months
