Tutting

Ds1 (awaiting asd diagnosis, motor delay and sensory issues) age 5 has started making a tutting noise in the middle of sentances.

An example is "peppa is a pig". It's totally random, he's not cross or fed up and it's nearly every time he talks.

I would have posted this in chat as it's prob just a 5 year old thing but I've posted here as he doesn't know or won't tell me why he's doing it and due to his other difficulties I don't want people telling me to tell him off or other such "answers".

Has anyone else come across this? Should
I query it with him or ignore it?

It sounds like it's a tic. It might be short lived, it migh persist, it might be a one off, or it might be the first of many.

Not unheard of in NT children, but more common where neurological disorders are involved.

DS1's latest one is verbalising "pshaw", almost every time he speaks, particularly when anxious or off kilter.

If it is a tic, querying it might actually make it worse, btw. Being conscious of them tends to increase the "itch" that sets them off in the first place.

DD has a range of seemingly random noises she makes, but we are beginning to recognise a pattern and think some are her interpretation of the little noises we all make.
She has a sort of tut she makes when she's really stressed, it comes in between words and she gets annoyed with it herself so we try not to draw attention to it but offer a small diversion so she can gather her thoughts again

Thank you. I was wondering if it was a tic. I won't make reference to it if it's likely to make it worse. Is it worth mentioning it to his paediatrician?

Yes, mention it, but lots of children have tics that disappear quickly, so you will prob be told to just keep an eye on it.
Definitely don't highlight it at home x
