my sister had a baby 8 weeks ago but she came out not breathing, and then started to fit
she has about 7 fits a day and was tube fed till last week. docs say she has cp but not sure what tape till baby is 8 mths,
baby came out of hosp at 6 weeks so she is still very new to us.
my sister is only 17yrs old i'm 31 (big sister) she is coping very well but i do worry
has anybody else got a child or knows a child with cp what shall we expect?

Hi I have a son with CP, I was 18 when he was born, he is now 8. CP is an umbrella term which covers, Diplegic (mainly legs) Quadplegic (all four limbs) Hempeplegic (one side). There is spastic CP, dystonic CP, hypotonic CP and many other forms.
My son is diplegic.
Unfortunely as the doctors have said, you can't tell what form of CP a child has until they are a bit older. Your sister should have been referred for physio which will her your niece to get her legs and arms moving and using her back. When the baby is 3 months old, she will be entitled to Disablity living allowence (DLA) and carers allowence. CTC also give an extra allowence on the total for the year, when you have a child with CP.
My son is 8 and can walk about, not for long and is very slow compared to his peers, he has a weekchair for distances. He is in mainstream school and doing very well.
The only other thing I will point is that no 2 children with CP are the same, they are always affected in different ways.

HI dmo
It's good your sister has your support, my ds is 3.4yrs & has mild spastic diplegia, (& a few other problems) he can walk although tires very easily & falls frequently. It is very difficult from such an early age for teh DR'S to say how your niece will be effected, my sons physio told us after he started walking that she never believed he would walk!
The important thing is to get as much support as possible for your niece & for your sister, sometimes the shock & upset of a diagnosis can take a little time to show so just be there for her.
Just make sure you do all the nice lovely things that you would do with a new baby, take lots of photos & enjoy being a proud aunty.
Congratulations!
